Penmatsa Subbaraju is an Indian film actor who works primarily in the Telugu, Tamil and Kannada film industries. He is known for the films Baahubali: The Conclusion (2017), Pokkili (2006) and Billa (2009). He mostly plays negative roles in movies.

After completing his studies, he graduated in Mathematics from DNR College, Bhimavaram. Thereafter, he took some computer courses and started working at Dell Computers in Hyderabad. Once, while working as a computer engineer, Subbaraju visited the home of film producer Krishna Vamsi’s assistant to repair his computer. There he caught the attention of Krishna Vamsi, who invited him to play a role in his film Khadgam.

Subbaraju started his acting career in 2003 with the Telugu film Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi. He plays a boxer in the film. His performance in the film led to opportunities to play warriors in more films. Later, he played the lead role in the Tamil remake of “Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi” titled “M. Kumaran S/O Mahalakshmi” and became an overnight sensation.
Later, he played a follower in the Telugu film Arya. Some of his popular movies include Subash Chandra Bose, Yogi, Neninthe and Pokiri. He made a cameo appearance in the super hit movie Baahubali: The Conclusion.
He has also appeared in several Bollywood films apart from Tamil, Telugu and Kannada films. He played the comic character “Theda” in the Bollywood movie “Bbuddah Hoga Terra Baap”. He also appeared in Ram Gopal Verma’s Department.

In 2017, the Ministry of Excise and Prohibition issued summons to 12 prominent figures in the Telugu film industry in relation to drug rackets in Hyderabad. Subaraju is one of them. On July 21, 2017, the SIT (Special Investigation Team) of the Telangana excise department questioned Subbaraju about his “involvement” in the drug gang and its leader Calvin Mascarenhas. The actor reportedly revealed the names of nine actors from prominent families involved in the case.
