Subodh Kumar Jaiswal was born on Saturday, September 22, 1962 (58 years old in 2020) in Dhanbad Sindri, Jharkhand. His zodiac sign is Virgo. In 1978, he went to school at De Nobili CMRI, Digwadi, Dhanbad. He did his degree in English at DAV College, Chandigarh and later did his MBA at the Punjab University College of Commerce. While pursuing his MBA, he gave the NDA exams three times but failed to qualify. He then attempted the UPSC exams and passed them.

His father, Shiv Shankar Jaiswal, was a contractor, businessman and philanthropist of the Food Corporation of India, who died in 2008. Subodh’s mother’s name is Karuna Jaiswal. He has two brothers, Prince and Manoj Kumar Jaiswal (Executive Vice President of Murugappa Group). His grandfather, HN Chowdhary, was an excise inspector.

Profession
After clearing the UPSC, he was appointed as the Deputy Superintendent of Police in Amravati, Maharashtra in 1986. In 2003, he was appointed as the head of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the High Court to investigate the multi-crore fake stamp paper scam perpetrated by Abdul Karim Telgi. The case was later handed over to the CBI. In 2006, he was appointed as the head of the Anti-Terrorism Squad to investigate the Malegaon blast case.

He has also served in the Special Protection Group (SPG), Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW). In 2018, he was appointed as the Mumbai Police Commissioner and in 2019, he served as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Maharashtra. In May 2021, he was appointed as the Director General of the Central Bureau of Investigation after a series of meetings between Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of India NV Ramana and Leader of Opposition Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury. Initially, three people were shortlisted for the post, including Kumar Rajesh Chandra (1985- Bihar IPS cadre), VSK Kaumudi (1986- Andhra Pradesh cadre) and Subodh Kumar Jaiswal. Regarding the appointment of Subodh, ACC Secretary Srinivas R Katikithala said,
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, acting on the recommendation of the panel, approved the appointment of Subodh Kumar Jaiswal (BJP 1985) as Director General of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a period of two years from the date of assumption of office or until further orders, whichever is earlier.”

- His father founded the Rotary Club in Sinderi in 1992, dedicated to the welfare of the people, and he served as the president of the Rotary Club of Sinderi until 2008.
- While in school and college, he regularly participated in various sports including football, badminton and volleyball.
- Various differences arose between Uddhav Thackeray and Subodh after he was appointed as the DGP of Maharashtra in 2019. Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said in an interview with the media,
Mr Jaiswal is a competent official. But he is disappointed with the way the state government has been functioning in the past few months. He has never been trusted. This is happening for the first time in the state.”
