Sujata was born in Mumbai in 1964 to a middle-class Telugu-speaking family. In her early years, her family was neither wealthy nor stable. According to her, she suffered child abuse and domestic violence when she was 20 years old.

She was born to V. Krishnamoorthi (father) and Sulochana Krishnamoorthi (mother). She has one sibling, Suchitra Krishnamoorthi (sister), an actor, singer, writer and painter. Her sister Suchitra Krishnamoorthi is the ex-wife of legendary director Shekhar Kapoor.
When she was 30 years old, she gave birth to a dead child. When she was in her thirties, she divorced her husband. She has a daughter named Kritika Kumar with her ex-husband.
Profession
She started her acting career by playing the role of Sandhya Khanna. She made her film debut with The Memsahib (2006). She has appeared in many movies and TV series. One of her most notable works is playing the younger sister of legendary actress Sridevi in the 2012 British film Vinglish. In an interview, she revealed that her role in the movie was not good. All the films she acted in were flops before starring in Gauri Shinde’s English. She then acted in Anand L. Rai’s Raanjhanaa (2013) and Karan Johar’s Gori Tere Pyaar Mein (2013).
Apart from films, she has also appeared in TV series such as Kingston Hotel, Bombay Talk, Anil Kapoor 24 and Jiya Jale.

She said in an interview that she slept a lot while relaxing. She enjoys attending parties, watching movies, listening to music, reading, etc. Her favorite book is You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay. Her favorite movies are The Anushree Experiments (2013) and Fukrey (2013).

She died of metastatic cancer on August 19, 2018. She is in stage four. In 2006, at the age of 40, she was diagnosed with cancer. However, she was reportedly cured in 2012. After starring in English Vinglish and Raanjhanaa, she fell back into the grip of the disease again. She is undergoing surgery at Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai.
