Application and initial training
The UAE government launched an astronaut program in 2017 to create the country’s first astronaut corps. More than 4,000 people submitted applications for the program. In September 2018, the Ruler of Dubai, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, announced that Sultan Al Neyadi and Major Al Mansouri were shortlisted from all applicants, at the Dubai Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Astronaut training at the Sid Space Center. After completing initial training in the United Arab Emirates in 2019, Mansouri and Nayadi were sent to Russia to receive one year of cosmonaut training at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City, Moscow.
NASA Advanced Training
After completing their training in Russia in 2020, they were sent to Houston, Texas, where the two received an additional six months of training under the 2018 Implementing Arrangement (IA) signed by the UAE and NASA. They were trained on the International Space Station (ISS) to operate equipment and machinery, handle low-pressure and ammonia leaks, and fight fires. They also received training in severe cold weather and performed daily activities such as food preparation. Additionally, they learned how to operate cameras for event recording and Earth photography from space, as well as communication skills for interacting with ground stations. In total, they completed more than 90 courses and totaled more than 1,400 hours of training.
Al-Nayadi and Al-Mansouri have since begun training at NASA’s Johnson Space Center Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL) in Houston, Texas. Their training includes adapting to the microgravity encountered during space travel, mastering the operation of the extravehicular mobility unit (EMU), mastering the maintenance skills of the International Space Station, conducting incapacitated crew rescue (ICR) exercises, and participating in relevant theoretical and practical exercises. training courses. A T-38 jet aircraft.
After 20 months of training, the two received NASA astronaut badges, confirming that they successfully completed basic training and were qualified to conduct space missions. They then traveled to Canada, where they learned how to operate the International Space Station’s robotic arm, which helps receive cargo sent from Earth.
astronaut career
Arriving at the International Space Station
In 2019, the UAE government announced that Major Al Mansouri was selected as the first Emirati astronaut to fly on a mission to the International Space Station. In addition, Nayadi became Mansouri’s replacement, which means that if Mansouri is unable to participate in the space mission for any reason, Nayadi will take Mansouri’s place. On July 25, 2022, Neyadi was selected as Specialist 1 for Expedition 69 of the International Space Station, part of NASA’s SpaceX Crew-6 mission. The mission is the UAE’s first long-duration space mission. After being selected, Nayadi said:
Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Your Highness. My selection as the first Arab astronaut on a long-duration mission is a great honor and responsibility, and I accept it with a strong desire to once again fly the UAE flag high in space. “
He boarded SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft at the Kennedy Space Center in the United States on March 2, 2023, and arrived at the International Space Station at approximately 6:40 a.m. UTC on March 3, 2023.
Experiments on the International Space Station
On the International Space Station, Nayadi’s team conducted more than 250 experiments, of which he participated in more than 20 experiments. According to sources, Nayadi volunteered to be a subject of numerous experiments conducted on the International Space Station. In an interview, he talked about it and said:
We ourselves are the subjects. When we do experiments, we have many sensors on our body. These machines record our sleep, vascular activity, breathing, and more. There is radiation in space and muscles relax. How we control (or mitigate) these things is also part of our medical experiments. “
He is involved in research efforts that assist NASA in preparing for lunar missions and other deep space exploration missions. His team also performed fluidics tests (examining the dynamics of fluids in space) and analyzed how materials burn and react in microgravity and various atmospheric conditions. He has also contributed to studying the rhythmic movement of heart tissue in space and developing state-of-the-art technology for 3D printing human organs.
See how fluids behave in the closed confines of microgravity. I’m currently studying fluid dynamics in space. 🧪This will help us understand wave turbulence on liquid surfaces and sloshing in spacecraft tanks, thereby improving satellite fuel delivery systems. pic.twitter.com/vYNyxV1Is8
