Sumit Awasthi was born in Gautam Buddha Nagar, Uttar Pradesh. He received his education from Central Public School, Indore. He joined Holkar Science College, Indore to pursue a degree in science. Later, he did his postgraduate studies in journalism from Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan, Delhi.

He started his career by writing articles for newspapers like The Pioneer, Navbharat Times and Jansatta.
After completing his postgraduate degree in Journalism, he interned at Jansatta. He started his career as a journalist and anchor at Zee News in 1997. Later, he worked with one of the top news channels in India like Aaj Tak and IBN 7. In November 2018, he joined ABP News Channel as a Consultant Editor.

- While in school, he wanted to join the Indian Army and he took the entrance exam twice but failed both times.
- In one instance, he was interviewing senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi, who asked Sumit to ask questions as he wished. Later, Joshi took the camera and deleted the video.
- He received the Madhav Jyoti Puraskar Award, one of the biggest awards in the journalism industry; in 2012 he was adjudged the best journalist.
- He has also received many other prestigious awards in the field of journalism, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for Excellence in 2019.
- His hobbies include travelling, gardening and playing snooker.
- He has appeared as an expert in many episodes of Kaun Banega Crorepati.
