Sunil Salam started doing water sports at a very young age. He comes from a family where the only source of income is his father’s job as a fisherman. Talking about the start of his canoe trip, Sunil said:
When I started it was very difficult because of the high cost of boats and other equipment. A pedal costs at least Rs 40,000 and a boat costs Rs 4-5 lakh. Initially, my family and relatives funded me but after joining the Indian Army in 2017, I was able to manage myself. ”
Sunil said his love for water and water sports came from growing up near Loktak Lake, the largest freshwater lake in northeast India. His journey into water sports started when he took his first kayaking lesson at a training center called Takmu Water Sports Complex on the banks of Loktak Lake. In 2013, on the advice of his aunt, a canoe instructor, he moved to Hyderabad. In 2015, he was selected to participate in the national training camp and in 2016, he became the national champion. After training at the Army Center in Roorkee, Sunil further honed his skills at the SAI (Sports Authority of India) center in Bhopal under the guidance of men’s team captain Pijush Baroi. coach.

Sunil Salam competed in the 2018 Asian Games in Palembang, Jakarta. Sunil and his teammates participated in the men’s 1,000-meter doubles kayak race but did not win a medal. Talking about the 2018 Asian Games, Sunil said:
In 2018, we were on track to win a medal at the same event, but my partner got sick on race day and things went haywire. We competed but didn’t do our best. ”
Sunil Singh Salam and Arjun Singh start canoeing together in 2023. They competed in the 2023 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in Duisburg, Germany. The pair made it to the finals and finished ninth.

The last time the Indian team (consisting of Sigi Sadanandan and Johnny Rommel) won an Asian Games medal in the 1000m doubles kayak event was during the 1994 Asian Games in Hiroshima. Thus, Sunil Salam and Arjun Singh became the second Indian team to win a medal in this category at the Asian Games. The team’s goal is to compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
