Sunita Gehlot was born in a simple Hindu family in Rajasthan. After her marriage to Ashok Gehlot on November 27, 1977, she came into the media spotlight. After her marriage, Jodhpur became her hometown. Sunita was actively involved in Ashok Gehlot’s campaign; especially in his home constituency of Sadapura in Jodhpur.

She was born in Jaipur, Rajasthan to Babu Ramswaroop Chandel. Her father died in Jaipur in December 2011. Sunita belongs to Chandel Rajput (Kshatriya) community.
