Sunny Hostin Was ‘Horrified’ After Gaining 40 Lbs. During COVID, So She Started Weight Loss Medication Mounjaro

Sunny Hostin revealed she turned to prescription weight loss drugs after gaining 40 pounds. during the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Tuesday in the episode Viewthe former prosecutor, 55, said she used the popular drug Mounjaro, adding that “it’s a shame when you gain weight” and that “I’ve never experienced that kind of shame before”.

“I gained 40 pounds during COVID,” Hostin said. “All I did was eat… I love to cook, and I discovered, I love to eat. And I was terrified that I would have to go out for air. So I took Mounjaro.”

There were also health effects for Hostin. “I found my cholesterol went up to 200 when I gained extra weight. And I’m using Mounjaro and my cholesterol is now 140,” she said. “I feel better, I think I look better, and that’s what people are all about.”

Her discovery came as did Hostin’s View Co-host Whoopi Goldberg said she also used Mounjaro to lose weight, when she noticed her weight was almost 300 lbs. “I just always felt like me. And then I saw myself and thought, ‘Oh! That’s a lot of me!’ Goldberg said.

The women on the panel — including Sara Haines, Joy Behar and Alyssa Farah Griffin — discussed Oprah Winfrey’s ABC project The Oprah Special: Shame, Guilt, and the Weight Loss Revolution. The program talked about obesity, which was declared a disease by the American Medical Association in 2013, and the growing trend of using drugs like Mounjar and Ozempic to treat it.

Winfrey — who revealed to PEOPLE in December that she uses a prescription weight-loss drug as part of her health and wellness regimen, but did not name the drug — shared the shame she’s long felt about her weight on the special.

“For 25 years, making fun of my weight was a national sport,” Winfrey, 70, said, recalling decades of painful headlines mocking her size.

It wasn’t until she began to remove the flaws from her thinking that she was able to heal. “I realized that all these years I’ve been blaming myself for being overweight, and I have a predisposition that no amount of willpower can control,” she said on Monday’s show. “Obesity is a disease. It’s not about willpower – it’s about the brain.”

– When I tell you how many times I blamed myself – the emotional Winfrey continued. “Because you think you’re smart enough to figure this out, and then you keep hearing that you’re fighting your brain.”

Hostin praised Winfrey for her honesty in the special and hoped that talking about obesity would help change people’s minds.

“Fatness is a disease,” Hostin noted. “If somebody has diabetes, and they’re being treated for diabetes, that’s fine. When somebody has some kind of heart disease, that’s fine. They’re not ashamed of it. But when somebody’s fat, they’re ashamed of it.”

She opened more about it on View‘with Behind the table podcast on Tuesday, explaining that she first took Ozempic, but had terrible constipation.

Within a month of switching to the lowest-dose Mounjaro, Hostin said she saw a difference. “I was just able to lose weight and eat normally, as opposed to cramming, which I was used to,” she said.

“I think these drugs are life-changing and life-saving,” Hostin added. “We were at home for 18 months. I became a mixologist, I drank a lot of margaritas, a lot of trailers. I like to cook anyway, I baked a lot of bread… I went up 4 sizes. What do you see now, what I looked like before the pandemic, before menopause . My husband says, ‘Oh, wow, you look like when I first met you.’ ”
