Susan Magdalene Boyle was born on April 1, 1961, in Blackburn, West Lothian, Scotland, to Patrick and Bridget Boyle. Her father was a miner and World War II veteran who also sang at the Bishops Blaize, and her mother was a shorthand typist. Her parents were both born in the Lanarkshire town of Motherwell. They also had ancestors from County Donegal in Ireland.
Boyle was the youngest of four brothers and five sisters, born when her mother was 45 years old. She was raised to believe, however, that she was deprived of oxygen during a difficult birth due to her mother’s advanced age, resulting in a learning disability. She was told in 2012-2013 that she had been misdiagnosed and has Asperger syndrome with an above-average IQ; she had been bullied as a child.
