Sushmita Dev served as the President of Silchar Municipal Council, Assam in 2009 and served till 2014. Sushmita Dev was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly in 2011. In 2014, she contested the Lok Sabha elections in Silchar. constituency on the Indian National Congress ticket and won; however, she quit the party in 2019. In 2014, she was appointed to the Committee on Women’s Empowerment, the Standing Committee on Science and Technology, and the Committee on Environment and Forests.
