Suvra Mukherjee was the First Lady of India from 2012 until her death in 2015; wife of Pranab Mukherjee, the 13th President of India. She died on 18 August 2015 at the age of 74 from respiratory illness.

Suvra Mukherjee was born on Tuesday, September 17, 1940 (aged 74 at the time of her death) in Jessore, British Bengal, India (now Naral district, Khulna district, Bangladesh). She moved to Calcutta in 1950, at the age of 10, after the partition of India in 1947. She holds two postgraduate degrees in political science and history.

In a 2012 interview with The Times of India, she said of her relationship with her husband:
“We were not like couples today. We were not in a loving relationship and we did not express our affection openly. It was all in the head and heart. We did not really indulge in small talk. At our age, it was more about relying on each other wholeheartedly. His love for me was different. Every day after taking a bath, he would come to me, touch my forehead and chant some mantra. He did it every day of the year and yesterday was no exception. This was his way of expressing his love. We have been married for 55 years and we have never had a fight for a single day!”
The couple has three children; two sons and a daughter – Abhijit Mukherjee (politician), Indrajit Mukherjee (technology analyst) and Sharmistha Mukherjee (dancer and politician).

Suvra Mukherjee was suffering from a long-term respiratory disease. She breathed her last at the Army Research and Referral Hospital, New Delhi on August 18, 2015. After her death, her body was taken to the Lodhi Road Electric Crematorium, 13, Tarkatora Road, New Delhi, where her last rites were performed.
Many prominent politicians including Narendra Modi, Manmohan Singh, Sheikh Hasina attended her funeral.

- Suvra Mukherjee admired the philosophy of the great Bengali polymath Rabindranath Tagore and encouraged people to understand its truth or benefits.
- She is a singer and dancer of Rabindranath Tagore’s dance drama Rabindranath Sangeet and has performed Tagore’s dance dramas around the world over the years.
- As a dancer, she founded the Gitanjali Dance Company in the late 1970s to promote the works of Bengali polymath Rabindranath Tagore. She has been guiding and leading the company for a long time.
- In addition to her love of music, she is also a talented painter and has held many successful group and solo exhibitions.
- Suvra Mukherjee had a cordial relationship with the famous singer Kumar Sanu. She released many albums for Kumar Sanu related to Rabindra sangeet and religious music.
- She also worked as a teacher at Birsinghpur Vidyasagar Balika Vidyalaya School in Ghatal, West Midnapur for six months from February 1971 to August 1971. After her death, the school was closed for a day to pay respect to the former first lady.
- Even after becoming the First Lady of India, she remained a person who did not care about politics and preferred to stay away from politics.
- She revealed in an interview with Times of India that she lost her baby soon after giving birth.
- In March 2013, Suvra returned to her birthplace of Bangladesh on her last trip abroad. She and Pranab Mukherji visited her in-laws for the first time and were greeted by a traditional Bengali welcome, complete with Shankha trumpets and the local “uloo dhoni” and “mangal deep” aarti.
