Swatantra Dev Singh is an Indian politician and a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He assumed office as Jal Shakti and Disaster Management Minister, Government of Uttar Pradesh on March 25, 2022.

Swatantra Dev Singh was born on Friday, February 13, 1964, in Ori village, Jamalpur block, Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh (age 60 years; as of 2024). His zodiac sign is Aquarius. In 1985, he pursued his bachelor’s degree in biology from Bundelkhand University, Jhansi. Swatantra first became interested in politics while in college. In 1985, he contested the elections for student union president of DVC College Ole Mirzapur but failed. In 1986, while he was still in college, he joined the RSS and served as the pracharak of the Sangh. In 1989, he started serving as Organization Minister in Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

In 2013, he became the West Uttar Pradesh in-charge of the Bharatiya Janata Party. In 2014, he took charge of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s election campaign in Uttar Pradesh. In 2014, he became the chief in-charge of Union Water Resources Development Minister Uma Bharti’s Ganga Yatra from Moradabad to Ballia. In 2017, he began serving as Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Transport, Protocol and Electricity. In 2019, he became the chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party. In March 2022, he was elected as the Uttar Pradesh Jal Shakti and Disaster Management Minister. On July 30, 2022, he resigned as the president of the Uttar Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party. Singh’s resignation comes days after his deputy minister Dinesh Khatik tendered his resignation to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, citing his Dalit background. Therefore, he was treated unfairly by the officials of Jal Shakti Ministry. Karthik was reportedly unhappy with Singh and his team of officers heading the department.

- Before entering politics, he worked as a journalist with the Hindi daily Swatantra Bharat in 1986.

- In 2019, he organized a BJP rally in Madhya Pradesh during the Lok Sabha elections.
- Swatantra was named Congress Singh by his parents at birth, but due to his leaning towards the Bharatiya Janata Party, he changed his name to Swatantra Dev Singh. In an interview, one of his friends said of him:
I remember we were all sitting in the RSS office when we asked him why he was called Congress. He told us his father was an MP and was worried about the future of the party, so gave his son the name to ensure the party’s legacy lives on. But we collectively decided that his name should be changed and that’s how Swatantra came about. “
- He was not fond of the RSS’s ideology in college, but later, when he tried to understand the RSS better, he was impressed by the ideology and joined the RSS.
- In 2021, he spoke about the Samajwadi Party at a media conference and said that the party promoted family politics. He said in the statement,
The BJP stayed away from family-based politics and gave important posts to hard-working people in organizations and governments. Even an ordinary worker in our party can dream of sitting in the highest position. And in the Socialist Party, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas and Congress, ordinary workers are excluded from top positions because of their emphasis on family. “
