She won silver at the 2019 World Championships. Sydney also holds the under-20 world record of 53.60 seconds after setting a junior personal best of 52.75 seconds in 2018. At the 2016 New Balance Outdoor High School Nationals, Sydney won the 400m hurdles in 54.46 seconds, breaking Maxie’s prep record, world junior record and Lashinda Demus’ American junior record of 54.70.
McLaughlin began her outdoor season in April 2017 by breaking the national high school record in the 300m hurdles in 38.90 seconds at the Arcadia Invitational. McLaughlin was awarded the 2015-16 Gatorade National Female Athlete of the Year. and 2016-17. She was the first athlete in the 15-year history of the award to win it twice. When she won the award for the second time in July 2017, she appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated at age 17, and the magazine called her “one of the most dominant high school athletes ever.” After one year at Kentucky, in June 2018 she gave up NCAA eligibility to turn professional, and in October of the same year she signed a sponsorship deal with New Balance.
