Syed Zafar Islam is a politician and former investment banker. Syed joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on April 5, 2014 after being inspired by the political ideology of Narendra Modi. He is one of the prominent Muslim leaders of the party.

Syed Zafar Islam was born in 1971 (49 years old in 2020) in Hazaribagh, Jharkhand, India. He completed his schooling in Hazaribagh and then did his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Aligarh Muslim University. He also did his PhD from Delhi University and then went to IIM Ahmedabad for his Executive MBA.

Parents and siblings
Zafar’s father, Syed Nayeem Ahmed, was a small business owner who used to run his own clothing store. After his death, the store was run by Syed’s brother Shahbaz Ghani. He also has a brother, Syed Zubair Ahmed, who works as a BBC news reporter in Delhi.

Syed Zafar Islam is married. He has a son and a daughter who are currently studying in Mumbai.
Profession
Syed Zafar Islam completed his formal education from IIM Ahmedabad and later worked at Deutsche Bank for nearly 15 years. He worked as the financial director of Deutsche Bank before deciding to join politics. Zafar was impressed by Narendra Modi’s politics and work style. After this, he decided to join the BJP and became the national spokesperson of the party in 2014. In 2017, he became an unofficial director of Air India.
Facts/Trivia
- Besides banking and politics, Syed was also good at games and he represented Aligarh Muslim University as captain of the cricket team.
- Syed Zafar and Jyotiraditya Scindia are close friends and Zafar is said to have played a huge role in Scindia joining the BJP. Scindia decided to leave the Congress in 2020 and joined the BJP.
- As Scindia joined the BJP, officials took note of Syed’s contribution to the party’s growth and he was elected unopposed to the vacant Rajya Sabha seat from Uttar Pradesh.
- In 2013, Syed Zafar Islam faced housing problems when his fifth-floor apartment in Mumbai’s Island City Centre suffered from sewage problems, which flooded the apartment. The apartment was said to cost around Rs 9 crore locally. Bombay Realty, the real estate subsidiary of Bombay Dye, was in charge of the project, but they ignored his inquiries.
