Sylvia Likens was the young lady. She was the daughter of funfair workers who, in July 1965, left her and her sister Jenny in the custody of a destitute, pill-popping mother of seven named Gertrude Baniszewski as they set off on the road.
Spurgeon Davenport, the murder chief for the Indianapolis Police Department and a 35-year veteran, described what followed as “the most sadistic act I ever came across.”
In the following months, more information came to light and was covered in the press. With each report, the tale got crazier.
The youngster was beaten and abused over an extended period of time, according to the inquiry, which also showed the girl’s host mother and other young people. Over a three-week period, at least 10 people—probably more—systematically beat and tormented the 16-year-old girl, according to the authorities.
Paula Baniszewski, 17, and Stephanie Baniszewski, 15, were two of the mother’s children from a previous marriage, according to Gertrude Baniszewski, who reported to police that Sylvia had spread rumours about them being prostitutes at Tech High School.
She was sitting in the police holding cell, dressed in a green jail dress and a brown jumper. “My children are real religious children,” she remarked.
In Municipal Court 6, a lawyer remarked, “If some of these people had been this concerned about Sylvia earlier, she probably would be alive today.”
In their testimony at a habeas corpus hearing yesterday, two 12-year-old kids claimed that other kids doused Sylvia with a hose, pushed her downstairs, poured salt into her wounds, and hurled her off chairs.
Paula Baniszewski was ordered Wednesday by Judge Saul I. Rabb to remain in the Marion County General Hospital while recovering from childbirth. She gave birth to a girl on Thursday, and Rabb stated that he believed the jail would not be an ideal setting for recuperation. After Paula’s mother, Gertrude, the child was given that name.
