The name of Taib Mahmud’s first wife was Laila Taib. She was a Polish Muslim of Lipka Tatar origin. They were both married in a South Australian mosque in Adelaide on January 13, 1959. They got married when Laila was just 18 years old. Sadly, she passed away on April 29, 2009 after a battle with cancer. She was buried at the Demak Jaya Cemetery in Kuching. After the death of Laila Taib in 2010, Taib Mahmud remarried. He married Ragad Waleed Akkurdi, a Syrian-born woman and a widow in her early 30s. They got married on December 18, 2010. He died around 4:48 am. he took his last breath at the age of 87. The Sarawak government then declared an official period of statewide mourning for two days, with the state flag flown at half-mast.
