The name of Taib Mahmud’s first wife was Laila Taib. She was a Polish Muslim of Lipka Tatar origin. They were both married in a South Australian mosque in Adelaide on January 13, 1959. They got married when Laila was just 18 years old. Sadly, she passed away on April 29, 2009 after a battle with cancer. She was buried at the Demak Jaya Cemetery in Kuching.
