Tan France didn’t expect to leave his famous pompadour behind in 2024, but he did.
British fashion expert and A strange eye star, 41, may be known for his salt-and-pepper hairstyle, but he revealed in an interview with Page Six published Jan. 23 that he decided to make some changes to it at the urging of fans.
“I’d like to say it’s because I just wanted a change,” the stylist told the outlet. “But really, what caused it was I did something I try very hard not to do – which is I looked at the comments about myself after the new season.”

He explained that every time a new season of the reboot comes out (Season 9 was released on December 11, 2024), he takes into account viewer feedback for future episodes. And then he realized that his most recognizable asset was causing a lot of trouble.
“I saw that so many people hated my hair. And I thought, ‘Oh, I didn’t know they hated [it] so much. So maybe I’ll try something [new] while I’m still ‘relatively’ young'”, he said.

Despite the criticism surrounding her, France said she feels “better” with her refreshed haircut, which is shorter on top. He also hopes it can reflect his playful personality better than his previous appearance, which seemingly contributed to the “edgy” perception fans had of him.
“I can’t believe my hair made people think I was so uptight. It’s just… I’ve had the same hair for 15 years. It was easy for me to do it. I could do my hair in literally two to three minutes maximum. But apparently people thought I spent an hour on my hair.”

France got the haircut on December 24th and debuted the surprise transformation on Instagram on January 1st. “New year, new hair phase of my midlife crisis,” he wrote.
The A strange eye The cast — also including Jonathan Van Ness, Antonio Porowski, Karamo Brown and Jeremiah Brent — is currently touring the US on “The Fab Five Live!” tour that started in December in New York. The event will end with a scheduled concert in Los Angeles on March 12.
