Out and about in Dunedin, two of Canterbury’s finest, Sam Whitelock and Richie Mo’unga, took a moment to honor one of their region’s legends. “Clearly a prominent figure at Linwood, he dedicated so much of his time to the club,” remarked Whitelock about Norton.
“We have many guys who spent considerable time with him… I got to know him a bit while in Christchurch, and he was always warm and eager to chat. “He had no ego whatsoever and was always approachable. He will be sorely missed.”
For Mo’unga, the news hits even closer to home, as he is a proud product of Linwood Rugby Club, where Norton’s legacy continued even after his playing days. “Tane Norton was an exceptional human being, deeply rooted in Linwood,” said Mo’unga.
“He epitomized what it meant to be ‘Linwood tough’ – the toughest competitor, yet incredibly humble and willing to help anyone. “We owe the saying ‘Linwood tough’ to him. Despite not being a big man, he had a huge heart. He was a constant presence at the club rooms every Saturday, and I’m truly proud to be associated with a club he was part of.”
Mo’unga recalled the insightful conversations he shared with Norton during his early days at the club. While always welcoming, Norton was also candid, sharing stories of his grit and tenacity, both on and off the field. “He left an indelible mark on Linwood, Canterbury, and the All Blacks,” Mo’unga added.
