Tariq started his career as a clinical registrar at JN Medical College and taught MBBS students there from 1980 to 1983. From 1983 to 1985, he served as the medical school’s chief marketing officer. In 1985, he started working as a surgical specialist at King Fahd University Hospital (KFHU) in Saudi Arabia, where he worked for a year. From 1986 to 1993, he served as an assistant professor at JN Medical College. He has 9 years of experience as an associate professor. From 1997 to 1999, he served as the Honorary Secretary-General of the AMU Faculty Association. From 2002 to 2013, he became a professor in the Department of Surgery, JN Medical College and worked continuously for 11 years. From 2006 to 2009, he served as the Chairman of the Department of Surgery, JN Medical College. In 2007, he became Secretary of the Universiade Committee and held this position until 2014. In 2013, he became the chief medical director of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital. On May 17, 2017, he assumed office as the Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University. He has served as a member of the Indian Medical Council, a member of the Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Management (Lucknow), a member of the Board of Governors of the Maulana Azad Educational Foundation (Ministry of Minority Affairs, Government of India) and a member of the National Monitoring Committee, Committee on Minority Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India. He has served as a member of various committees of the Ministry of Education/UGC to discuss national education issues such as “Online Teaching”, “Online Examinations”, “Online Education Promotion” and “National Credit Framework”. He is also a member of the Academic Advisory Committee of NAAC, Bangalore and a member of the National Focus Group: Educational Technology in Schools. He served as the President of the Union of Surgeons of India (UP) and Secretary of the Teachers Association of Aligarh Muslim University. He was thrice elected to the Executive Council of Aligarh Muslim University, representing the faculty and staff. During his tenure as Vice-Chancellor of AMU, he established the School of Nursing, Pala Medical College, Department of Cardiology and Center for Biomedical Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Green and Renewable Energy and NHM programs such as Center of Excellence for Pediatric Early Intervention, Pediatric Cardiac Assessment and Center for Cardiac Surgery (PCECS), MCH Wing, Dara Shikoh Center for Interfaith Understanding and Dialogue. He also sought approval from the President of India to establish an Institute of Pharmacy. After serving as the vice-chancellor, AMU was rated A+ by NAAC for five consecutive years and listed as one of the five central second-category autonomous universities by the University Grants Commission. The university has launched many new courses including DM (Cardiology), MCH (Neurosurgery), MBA (Hospital Management and Islamic Finance), Master of Architecture, Master of Solar Technology, Biomedical Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Materials Science, Green Energy & Sustainability, Earthquake Engineering & Disaster Management, M.Voc (Honours), BSc Food Technology, Artificial Intelligence, Automotive Engineering (Electric Vehicles), MSc Digital Science, Cyber Security and Digital Forensics. Tariq represented India at the Indo-Indonesian Interfaith Dialogue in Yogyakarta. He is also a member of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Government delegation. Member of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council
In 2023, he was elected as a member of the Legislative Council of the Bharatiya Janata Party by Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandibhai Patel. He resigned as Deputy Prime Minister after being elected to the Bharatiya Janata Party. In an open letter to college students, faculty and staff, Tariq said:
As I step down, this is my last address to you as Vice-Chancellor. I had the opportunity to serve the agency for six years during both wonderful and challenging times. “

Protest against portrait of Muhammad Ali Jinnah in university
In 2018, AMU students staged a protest against the hanging of a portrait of Muhammad Ali Jinnah on the university campus. Tariq said it was not an issue and even met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to discuss the matter. He said that the portrait of the founder of Pakistan was kept in the AMU Students Union office since 1938. To stem student protests, a coordination committee of 16 senior faculty members was formed. Later, violence broke out on campus when members of the right-wing group Hindu Yuva Vahini entered the campus and clashed with university students over the appearance of the portrait. The university students claimed they were then taken to a police station but were later rescued by other protesters. Students demanded action against right-wing protesters chanting slogans at the university. They also called for a judicial inquiry into “police inaction”.

In 2022, Ashok Pandey, the national spokesperson of the Hindu Mahasabha, accused Tariq of corruption in the land scam, reservation scam and irregularities in the AMU college. Ashok revealed that no action was taken against those illegally occupying the land where AMU is being constructed. He further said that the land was later occupied by Tariq and named after his nephew. He also accused him of arranging jobs for his son and daughter-in-law at a medical school.

- In 2018, Tariq invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President of India Shri Ram Nath Kovind to attend the college graduation ceremony as the chief guests.
- In 2019, Tariq said in a statement that anti-social elements, including expelled former students, broke into the university and started throwing stones at police. He said in a statement that the school had no choice but to call the police. He further added that the students were doing this because false news was spread about the death of two students of Jamia Millia Islamia in police firing.
- During the Covid-19 pandemic, Tariq launched an online teaching intelligence course at the university. JNMC Hospital conducted Covid-19 testing, treatment and vaccine trials with his help.
- In 2020, when he was the vice-chancellor of AMU, students of the university protested against the CAA-NRC movement. He prevented students from doing Dharma on campus. Amid the protests, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed students online. Following BJP Chief Minister Narayan Dutt Tiwari’s visit to AMU not long ago, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited the AMU in 2020 campus.
- In 2020, students of the university staged protests against him during the Republic Day event after he made comments on the protests initiated by CAA-NRC at the university. In his speech, he said only peaceful protests were allowed on campus. The students came forward and started chanting slogans, demanding Tariq’s removal as vice-chancellor. Following the protests, strict action was taken against the protesting students.
- He wrote a letter to the UP chief secretary and police chief telling him that students protesting against the CAA movement were threatening him and his family. In the letter, he mentioned that he was called an “RSS/BJP member” and a CAA “supporter”.
- In 2020, he became the first volunteer for the Phase III clinical trial of Covaxin conducted by pharmaceutical company Bharat Biotech in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
- In 2021, Tariq expressed condolences over the death of former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Kalyan Singh, following which posters against him were put up on campus. Students said in the poster that Tariq had committed an “unforgivable crime” by condoling the death of Kalyan Singh, who was the chief minister when the Babri Masjid was demolished in 1992.

- Students of AMU claimed that Tariq never supported the students of his college and was always against them. According to students, he allowed police and paramilitary personnel to enter university campuses during the CAA protests but did not prevent police from attacking students. Aligarh Muslim University has removed books by two Islamic scholars from Pakistan, Abu Allah Maududi and Egypt’s Sayyid Qutb, from the syllabus of the Department of Islamic Studies. They claimed that right-wing ideologues asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to remove the book from the syllabus. In 2023, Tariq expressed his views on the BBC series “Modi Matters” and was subsequently criticized by students and secular groups. In his statement, Tariq said India’s Muslim minority groups did not face any problems under right-wing rule.
