Tarundeep Rai was born on Wednesday, February 22, 1984 in Prano Nanchi, South Sikkim (age 37; as of 2021). His zodiac sign is Pisces. He attended Government High School and spent his childhood in his hometown of Namche. Later, he was admitted to an Army school in Shillong. His interest in archery developed as a child after watching Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayana. Tarundeep and his friends often used bamboo and sticks to imitate bow and arrow battle scenes from the Ramayana.

In 2004, he won his first gold medal at the Asian Grand Prix in Bangkok. In 2005, he won a bronze medal in the men’s recurve team event at the Asian Archery Championships. In the same year, he won a silver medal in the men’s recurve team competition. At the Archery World Championships, he lost to Cui Yuanzhong 106-112 in the semifinals. He continued his winning streak by winning a bronze medal in the individual recurve event at the Asian Archery Grand Prix in Jakarta. Indian archery came into limelight at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, with Tarundeep Rai competing against Viswash, Jayanta Talukdar and Mann. “The years I had to battle a shoulder injury taught me everything in life. I even tried shooting with my left hand, but it didn’t help. I took painkillers, but they didn’t work. Almost half of that in 2008 and 2009 The time was unforgettable.”

Injury at such a young age of 24 was a huge setback for him, but he came back strong when he won the 2009 Asian Grand Prix in Tehran. The next year, he won four consecutive medals in the prestigious world competition, which was the golden stage of his life. In March 2009, he won the men’s recurve team gold medal at the 2nd Asian Grand Prix in Bangkok. He also won a silver medal in the same event at the Archery World Cup in Porec, Croatia.

In 2010, he became the youngest Indian archer to win a silver medal at the 16th Asian Games held in Yangon, Myanmar, in November 2010. He has been dominant throughout the decade as he has not slowed down in his lexicon. Winning a silver medal at the 2019 World Archery Championships in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and a bronze medal at the 2019 Asian Archery Championships in Bangkok are just a few of them. He was selected for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics to be held in 2021. He was in lockdown as the COVID-19 pandemic swept the country.
