Taylor Swift Reveals Her Folklore Album Takes Place in Ireland During Dublin Eras Tour Stop

Taylor Swift shares some of the inspiration behind her 2020 album Folklore.

During her Eras Tour in Dublin on Saturday, June 29, Swift, 34, opened up about how she developed the fictional story of her fantasy-inspired pandemic-era album — and revealed that Ireland played a big part in the story’s plot.

“Folklore in general, it just belongs to Ireland,” she told the crowd after finishing her performance of “Cardigan” during her second night at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium.

“How I imagined the world of the album [was like] Ireland. Storytelling with a lot of different characters,” Swift continued, referring to the stories on the record. “And you have that locked down. It’s very Irish, talking.”

According to the “Augusta” singer, Folklore it was an opportunity for her to try a “different” style of songwriting that she hadn’t explored before, which involved more linear stories and characters “falling in love and getting their hearts broken”. Swift added that she should have served as a storyteller for once, instead of sharing her personal feelings and experiences.

“When I made this album, it was two days into the pandemic that I started Folklore, I have not been to Ireland. So I had to create an album where there was an imaginary world that I pretended to go to every day while I was writing it… I have to be honest, it felt a bit like Ireland,” the Grammy winner told the audience.

– So, we are back where we belong! added Swift, before getting ready to launch into her song “Betty” — another character from her story-driven album. “Folklore it belongs to you guys.”

The singer’s first night in Dublin on Friday was also filled with Irish pride — during her performance of “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” her back-up dancer Kameron Saunders, 31, spoke some Irish (continuing Swift’s tradition of giving each era’s host country a shout-out in your native language). During one part of the song, the female dancer screamed the Irish phrase “póg mo thóin” — which translates to “kiss my ass” in English.

In the second part of last night’s fashion show, Swift wore a sparkly orange crop top and an ombre green skirt in the colors of the Irish flag.

When tickets for the “Cruel Summer” singer’s Irish shows first went on sale in July 2023, approximately 500,000 fans registered for the estimated 165,000 tickets available, according to The Irish Times.

Swift’s three shows in Dublin are her first since two nights in Croke Park for the Reputation Stadium Tour — marking her Irish stadium debut. At those 2018 concert dates, the superstar adoringly called the crowd “so kind” and “amazing” – and posted a bouquet of flowers she received from Irish band U2, signing the accompanying message, “Your Irish Fan Club”.

But Swift has visited the country at least once between her two major tours. While in town in 2021 to support then-boyfriend Joe Alwyn as he wrapped up filming Conversations with friendsthe singer was photographed with several servers at local restaurants in Belfast.

After her three nights in Dublin, Swift is ready to bring the Eras Tour to Amsterdam and then to several other cities in Europe. She will close the European leg of the tour with five more shows in London in August.
