Edward James Martin Koppel is an English-American television journalist who hosted the show Nightline from 1980 to 2005.
Before joining Nightline, he worked for ABC for 20 years as a TV reporter and news anchor. After becoming the host of Nightline, he was recognized as one of the most prominent serious interviewers on American television. Five years after it premiered in 1980, the show was watched by an estimated 7.5 million viewers each night.

Biography of Ted Kopel
Koppel was born an only child in Nelson, England. His parents are German Jews who fled Germany after Adolf Hitler’s rise to power and the rise of Nazism. Koppel was born just months after his father was imprisoned in 1940.
To support her young son, his mother sold her personal belongings and worked as manual laborers in London. After the internship ended, Koppel’s father was still not allowed to work in the UK, nor did he allow his wife to work.
After the war, the family managed to recover some of the confiscated property and decided to immigrate to the United States. While in England, Ted Koppel attended Abbotsholme School in Derbyshire. When he was 13 years old, his family moved to the United States, where his mother, Alice, became a singer and pianist, and his father, Edwin, founded a tire factory.
Koppel attended McBurney School, a private preparatory school in New York City, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science at age 20. Koppel later attended Stanford University, where he earned a master’s degree in political science studies and mass communications. His future wife, Grace Anne Dorney, met him at Stanford.

Career
Ted Koppel briefly worked as a teacher before working as a copywriter at The New York Times and a writer at WMCA Radio in New York. He was hired as ABC Radio News’ youngest reporter in June 1963, working for the daily Flair Reports program.
His and Charles Osgood’s coverage of the 1963 Kennedy assassination drew national attention. He was supposed to submit a short report, but due to downtime during the crisis, he was forced to improvise for an hour and a half.
In 1964, he participated in his first presidential nominating convention, the first of many. He started covering the civil rights movement in Selma, Alabama. ABC executives were impressed by Koppel’s ability to explain complex topics in simple terms.
In 1966, he switched from radio to national television as a Vietnam War correspondent for ABC News. He only agreed to take the position after the network operator agreed to move his wife and two children to Hong Kong to be closer to him. Before leaving, he signed up for a Vietnamese language course.
Koppel interviewed Nelson Mandela at a town hall meeting in 1990. Koppel became famous as the host of Nightline, a late-night news program. The program began with a series of special reports on the hostage crisis in Iran lasting 444 days. While hosting Nightline, Koppel hosted a special series called Perspectives, which featured media commentary and criticism.
