Tehmina Durrani is a Pakistani writer, artist and activist best known for her 1991 autobiography My Feudal Lord, which caused much controversy. She is also known for becoming the First Lady of Pakistan in 2022.

In 1970, Tehmina married Anees Khan at the age of 17. They divorced in 1976. Later, she married Ghulam Mustafa Khar, who served as chief minister and governor of Punjab. Mustafa was a chronic abuser and she wrote a book in 1991 about her abusive husband. The title of the book is “My Feudal Lord”. They divorced after fourteen years of marriage.

Tehmina began her writing career in 1991 with her autobiography My Feudal Lord. The book caused a lot of controversy because at the time it was unusual for a Pakistani woman to speak so strongly and openly about her abusive husband. Her husband is a well-known and respected figure in Pakistan.

Tehmina loves painting. In 1992, she displayed her paintings in one of her exhibitions, Catharsis. The painting was later used as the cover of her 1998 book “Blasphemy.” In 2016, she participated in another exhibition “Love Affair”. In an interview, she said of her paintings:
I’ve always wanted to draw but never had the time. I have painted about ten paintings over twenty years, but this one was all completed within the past five months. I’m not satisfied with my work, and I don’t think any artist is, but it’s a start. Now I’m still a curiosity, so I haven’t really found out if I’m good or not. “

After her divorce from Ghulam Mustafa Khar, Tehmina began living at the Pakistan Humanitarian Home Abdul Sattar Eddy. She believes her life has changed a lot since working with Eddie. In 1996, she wrote Edhi’s autobiography, titled Mirror for the Blind. In 2015, she founded the Tehmina Durrani Foundation, which started working for the welfare of the poor in 2017. In an interview, she talked about the foundation and said:
We’re choosing Eddie’s mission, where he left off. His duty was to serve humanity irrespective of caste and creed – and so is our duty. The core idea of its mission and vision is to build Pakistan into a social welfare state, impart the Adhi ideology of humanitarianism, tolerance and service to the underprivileged, empower women through economic independence, protect and rehabilitate children of war. “

In 1993, she went on a seven-day hunger strike against the government. She was taken to hospital and started her hunger strike after Prime Minister Moin Quraishi visited her in the hospital and asked her to stop it. In 2001, Tehmina supported acid attack victim Fakhra Younus. Fakhla accused her husband Bilal Khar (son of Tehmeena’s ex-husband Ghulam Mustafa Khar) of throwing acid on her face. Tehmina flew Yunus to Italy for treatment, but initially she could not get a passport. Later, due to pressure from public opinion, she got her passport. Tehmina requested financial support from the Italian government and Italian cosmetics company Sant’ Angelica to arrange treatment for Yunus. Yunus underwent thirty surgeries and could not bear the pain anymore, so he committed suicide in Italy on March 17, 2012. Her last rites were performed at Edhi Center in Karachi.

In 2012, journalists Shameen Obaid-Chinoy and Daniel Junge produced a documentary about Yunus’ life, Face. The documentary won the 2012 Academy Award for Best Documentary.

In 2015, Tehmina helped the Taliban in a terrorist attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar that killed many children. In the interview, she talked about the steps she would take to comfort the parents of their dead children. She said,
I have decided to establish a housing society for the parents of deceased children and I will ask the federal and provincial governments to provide land while asking friends and philanthropists like Malik Riaz of Bahria Town to pool resources for the project. “
In 2001, she launched a campaign to liberate the spirit of Islam and put Muslim women in power.

Tehmina caused controversy when she wrote her autobiography “My Feudal Lord” in 1991. In the book, she writes about her marriage to Pakistani politician Mustafa Khar and how she was abused by her husband during the marriage. - Tehmina’s husband Shehbaz is a cancer survivor and required treatment while in the custody of the National Accountability Bureau in 2018. In a Twitter post, she questioned the medical facilities in prisons, saying:
I visited CM Shehbaz on Saturday and it made me uneasy. Because he is a cancer survivor, his doctors in London conduct regular pet scans and blood tests. Tests conducted in Islamabad showed some unusual signs. A committee of doctors will be formed to examine them. But that hasn’t happened yet. Why? “
