TESCO has introduced “magic tills” in a major shake-up that will end the annoying moments of “an unexpected item in the packing area”.
The supermarket giant is trialling new technology which means customers don’t have to scan items at self-service checkouts.

Once all the shelves have been weighed, all the customer has to do is place their purchases in their baskets.
The new system uses sensors and cameras in the store, monitors what is put into each bag and automatically adds up the amount purchased.
Customers will be able to go to checkout with their items before a list of everything in their cart is “magically” displayed on the screen.
Customers will then be able to check that their listing is correct before paying for the goods.
Store staff must ensure they are restocking the shelves accurately, but errors can be corrected at checkout.
Sarah Quiggin, the store’s head of customer experience, said: “It’s about removing some of the challenges around scanning.
“Sometimes there can be problems with certain barcodes and products.
“The ‘unexpected item in the packaging’ warning is a classic that gets customers frustrated, understandably so.
“With ‘no-scan’ checkouts, you come to the checkout and pay.”
It was unveiled at a branch in Hammersmith, London, The Sunday Times reported.
Some were critical of the Tesco system, with Tom Gough, 31, saying he came to the till with a packet of tortellini and some pasta sauce, but the screen showed two packets of pasta and no sauce.
But others were more positive. Mike Lee, 23, said: “The first time it was like magic, because it appeared on the screen without me doing anything.
“I was confused – but now I use it every time.”
In 2021, Tesco opened its first GetGo store in central London, offering its first checkout-free service.
Customers log into a Tesco store via the app, pick up the groceries they need and can walk straight out without going to the till.
The supermarket giant currently has four GetGo stores located in London – Aston University, Chiswell Street, Fulham and High Holborn.
The latest change means customers will no longer need to download or use an app to shop in-store.
It comes after supermarket chain Booths scrapped almost all self-service checkouts in its stores.
The decision was said to be in response to customer feedback.
The change is the first major grocer in the UK, bucking a trend that has seen all the major players open thousands of tills and dramatically reduce the number of staffed tills.
Booths, the luxury supermarket chain, said it believes staff serving customers provide a better customer experience.
So it made the decision to remove the automatic teller from all but two of its 28 stores.
