If you’ve ever worked in retail or been to the mall during the height of the holiday season, you’ve probably heard the same old Christmas carols. While they’re all classics for a reason, listening to them over and over again can make you feel ready for a long hibernation instead of getting in the mood to decorate the halls.
In the holiday mood? We’ve rounded up our favorite Christmas covers to update your holiday lists this year. (To make it easy for you, we’ve prepared a Spotify playlist with them all in one place.) We think some of them are even better than the originals, but we’ll let you be the judge!
A cover of “All I Want for Christmas Is You” by Dolly Parton
It’s hard to compete with Mariah Carey’s classic, but if anyone can do it, it’s Dolly Parton. He gets a little help from late-night host Jimmy Fallon (and some banjos) to create a country-fied version of the most popular Christmas song of all time. Merry Christmas, Dolly!

This is one of those times when the cover really gives the original a run for its money. Sure, Darlene Love’s original version is amazing, but there’s something about Carey’s powerful vocals that really take this song to the next level.
Kacey Musgraves Covers “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”
Just call her Sleigh-cey Musgraves because this country star did “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” — originally sung by none other than Judy Garland in 1944. Meet in St. Louis — her own when she covered her during The Kacey Musgraves Christmas Show.
Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s cover of “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?”
“Here comes the advance jackpot question.” Does it get sweeter than 500 days of summer Costars collaborate on this sweet and festive tune?
Originally recorded by Margaret Whiting in 1947, the song has been covered by several celebrities and artists, including Zooey Deschanel, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ella Fitzgerald, the Carpenters, Barbra Streisand, Harry Connick Jr., Bette Midler, Idina Menzel, Musgraves, Patti LaBelle and more .
A cover of “What Christmas Means to Me” by John Legend
John Legend’s soulful vocals are a perfect fit for Stevie Wonder’s 1967 song. Additionally, Wonder accompanied the singer on harmonica during his wife Chrissy Teigen’s 2018 Christmas special. Legendary Christmas with John and Chrissy, so you know it has his seal of approval.

Justin Bieber’s performance proves that Busta Rhymes really can rap over anything.
Cover of “Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town” by Bruce Springsteen.
When the boss says, “You better be good, for God’s sake,” you know he means it. Somehow, defying all logic, Bruce Springsteen’s gruff vocals work perfectly with this festive tune. You can’t forget the saxophone!
Cover of “Last Christmas” by Carly Rae Jepsen
It’s hard to improve on a song like “Last Christmas,” but Carly Rae Jepsen takes on the Wham! A Christmas favorite and updates it to a poppy bop that honestly doesn’t have to be limited to the holiday season.
Ne-Yo Covers “The Christmas Song”
The R&B singer covered a stripped-down, a cappella version of Nat King Cole’s “The Christmas Song,” and Ne-Yo’s version is as delightful and cozy as a Christmas fire.
Kylie Minogue Covers “Santa Baby”
Probably the only song in the history of Christmas that can be described as sexy, “Santa Baby” is another one of those songs you’ll hear during the Christmas season. While we’ll always love Eartha Kitt’s version, Kylie Minogue’s seductive cover keeps it close to the original, which is perhaps what makes it so great.
Gwen Stefani Covers “Jingle Bells”
We all know “Jingle Bells,” but this rocking Gwen Stefani cover is jazzy and features lots of brass. It somehow makes a classic sound even more classic, if that’s possible.
Cover of “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” by Miley Cyrus and Mark Ronson
Stylistically, it doesn’t stray too far from the 1971 original, but Miley Cyrus’ powerful vocals and updated rock vibe make this John Lennon and Yoko Ono song worth adding to your playlist. Also making an appearance is none other than their son, Sean Ono Lennon.
A cover of “Christmas Wrapping” by the Spice Girls
Originally sung by The Waitresses, the 1981 pop song got a double dose of girl power when the Spice Girls covered it in 1998.
Sufjan Stevens cover of “Joy to the World”
Sufjan Stevens’ voice is basically made to lull you to sleep with the crackling of a fire.
Destiny Child cover of “Silent Night”
We have three words for you regarding the Destiny’s Child Christmas cover: Three. Part. Harmony.
Bright Eyes cover of “Blue Christmas”
First recorded by Elvis Presley, this cover of “Blue Christmas” leans on rock ‘n’ roll, updating Presley’s mournful song into a more upbeat one.
Fun. cover of “Sleigh Ride”
“Sledging along with you” sounds like fun, right?!
Cover of “Wonderful Christmastime” by Diane Ross
Diana Ross’s version of The Beatles’ 1979 classic — yes, the one that’s constantly playing in malls during the holidays — turns the tune into more of a Christmas carol with her gorgeous vocals.
Cover of “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” by Michael Bublé.
You didn’t think a Michael Bublé cover wouldn’t make the list, did you? There are plenty to choose from, but we love this cover of Bing Crosby’s 1951 standard “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas,” to which Bublé lends his soulful vocals.
