The Biggest Snubs and Surprises of the 2024 Golden Globe Film Nominations

This year’s film nominations for the Golden Globes brought more than a few surprises.

Barbie earned the most nominations (nine total) of any film this year, when the nominees for the 81st Golden Globe Awards were announced Monday morning. Oppenheimer followed by eight, i Killers of the Flower Moon and Poor people both earned seven nominations.

There were a few unexpected nominations in the film categories, including Jennifer Lawrence winning Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for her corny comedy No anger.

Timothée Chalamet also won Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy Wonka, in which he sings and dances as a young Willy Wonka in the origin story. (Johnny Depp received a Golden Globe nomination for the same role in his 2005 film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.)

For the movie A dream scenarioNicolas Cage also won for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, as did Joaquin Phoenix for Provocative Horror Film. Beau is afraid. (Phoenix, however, did not receive an actress nomination Napoleon.)

Several significant exclusions were also among the Golden Globe nominees.

Purple, an adaptation of the Broadway musical, was left out of the best musical or comedy category. Instead, the six nominees were: Air, American Fiction, Barbie, The Holdovers, May December and Poor people. Purple it did earn acting nominations for stars Fantasia Barrino and Danielle Brooks.

The category of best musical or comedy was also absent Little Mermaid and Wonka.

According to organizers of the Golden Globes, there were 97 films for best motion picture drama and 60 titles for musical or comedy, competing for six spots in the categories.

Viola Davis, considered by some to be the frontrunner of awards season (Air) and America Ferrera (Barbie) were not among the nominees for Best Supporting Actress, a category that is not divided by genre.

Movies like Napoleon, Ferrari and Iron Claw were completely shut out with zero nominations, despite having stellar actors and directors involved.

The 81st Golden Globe Awards will air live on CBS on Sunday, January 7th from 8-11pm ET. The show will also air on Paramount+ and be available on the CBS app.
