Nelson Thomas has encountered significant difficulties in his recovery from a car accident in March in which he was involved. Challenge star now faces a potential ankle amputation.
Thomas was rescued from his burning car in Austin, Texas by Minnesota Vikings player KJ Osborn and three other good Samaritans. His road to recovery was arduous, involving nearly two months in the hospital and multiple surgeries. In a recent video on Instagram, he shared some troubling news about his condition.

“I received the most disappointing news about my ankle,” Thomas wrote in the video.
In the video, Thomas shared that his orthopedist told him that his ankle was broken again and that it wasn’t healing. A medical assessment showed a more serious situation.
“Come to find out, where they have screws and plates, the bone broke. It didn’t heal back,” he said. “The doctor outlined my options. The stage I’m in right now is called the rescue stage, [means] either they can save my ankle or they can amputate it.”
In order to try to save the ankle, a CT scan and additional blood analysis are needed. This would be followed by ankle fusion surgery, a procedure that anchors the injured ankle joint to a fixed segment of bone, significantly limiting mobility. Despite the intent of the surgery, it carries significant risks and can often be unsuccessful, potentially culminating in amputation.
“This isn’t going to break me, but damn, I’ve been listening to too much bad news,” Thomas said in the video. “I just wanted good news today.”
In his recent Instagram update, Thomas mentioned that he is seeking a second opinion from a specialist regarding the treatment of his ankle.
Thomas began his journey into reality TV with Season 3 Are you the one? 2015. The following year, he debuted on MTV Challenge. Over eight years, Thomas participated in 10 seasons, earning more than $30,000 in winnings.
