Hydrogen water is water in which hydrogen is dissolved. The effects of hydrogen water are still being studied, but early evidence suggests that it may have some health benefits. We break down what researchers know so far about hydrogen water and share tips on how you can make hydrogen water at home.
- Buy a hydrogen water bottle that will fill your water with hydrogen bubbles.
- Insert the hydrogen tablet into the water bottle and close it tightly.
- Place the magnesium rod in a closed bottle of water for a few minutes.
- Pour the water using the sealed test tube containing the malic acid and magnesium rod.
Use magnesium rods to create an H2 reaction. Place the metal magnesium rod in an airtight glass or stainless steel bottle. Fill the bottle to the top with filtered water, close it tightly and let it stand for 15-20 minutes.[1]
- This probably does not create a very high concentration of hydrogen—expect about 1 ppm of hydrogen in the water.
- Since hydrogen molecules are very small, hydrogen can easily escape from porous materials. For best results, use a sturdy, airtight container, such as a double-walled stainless steel bottle.
Combine malic acid with a magnesium stick to increase H2 production. Place a magnesium rod in a test tube with about 1/4 teaspoon (1 gram) of food-grade malic acid powder. Fill the test tube almost to the top with filtered water. Use the pin to make a hole in the center of the stopper and use the stopper to close the tube. Place the entire test tube in a glass bottle with water, fill the bottle to the top with filtered water and put it in the freezer for about 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, take out the water bottle and shake it gently for about 2 minutes. Then unscrew the bottle and drink the water. [2]
- Wear gloves and goggles when handling malic acid – it can irritate your skin or eyes if it comes in contact with it.[3]
- The bottle will develop pressure as the reaction produces hydrogen gas, so be careful when opening the container.
- If the cap pops out of the tube, the water is still safe to drink – malic acid is safe to consume and is commonly used as a preservative.
Dissolve the hydrogen-generating tablet in a bottle of water. To use molecular hydrogen water tablets, insert the tablet into a container that you can seal tightly. Fill the container to the top with cold water, then close the lid tightly. Follow the directions on the package for how long to let the product dissolve—usually about 5 minutes.[4]
- If you use cold water, the tablet will take longer to dissolve, but you will get a better concentration of hydrogen in the water.
- Tablets are a good way to achieve a constant concentration of hydrogen in water.
Use a commercial hydrogen water bottle. Open the lid of your hydrogen water bottle and pour bottled or filtered water up to the fill line. Screw on the cap and turn on the water bottle, let it run according to the manufacturer’s instructions. When done, unscrew the top and drink the water.[5]
- You will be able to see hydrogen bubbles entering the water as the machine runs.
- Hydrogen water bottles charge water using two electrodes in a process known as electrolysis. One electrode creates oxygen—the byproducts are flushed out of the machine. The second creates hydrogen which is released into the water.
- You can also buy hydrogen water pitchers or benchtop hydrogen water generators – these are larger, more expensive machines that can produce more hydrogen water at once, but use the same basic electrolysis process.
