The Marvels First Reviews Praise Brie Larson, Call It a ‘Cosmic Triumph’

First reviews for The Marvels are in!

The latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe on the big screen is Brie Larson who leads her second film as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, but this time alongside Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) as they team up to save the universe.

Continuation in 2019 Captain Marvel — as well as the continuation of the Disney+ series MCU WandaVision, Ms. Marvel and Secret invasion — The Marvels sees Carol, Monica and Kamala (with a little help from Goose the Flerken, of course) join forces against Dar-Benn, Zawe Ashton’s seemingly alien villain.

Valerie Complex of Deadline calls the film “a cosmic triumph grounded in honesty and humanity”, praising the main character for “allowing him the complexity and depth that showcases Larson’s acting range”.

“Parris’s Monica Rambeau exudes charisma and nuance, while Kamala Khan’s Iman Vellani brings a refreshing innocence and humor,” Complex added. “Together, they transcend the fictional ‘girl power’ narrative, instead shining through the power of their individuality and agency.”

The Hollywood Reporter art and culture critic Lovia Gyarkye praised The Marvels for how it “pulsates with a quiet power fueled by the heartfelt bond between its three protagonists”.

“But it’s Vellani who really makes a splash,” she also said. “Her character’s bubbly personality adds levity and humor The Marvels, which makes it lighter than its predecessor. The actress really does a lot with a role that could easily be one-note, stealing almost every scene in the process.”

In early review, The Washington PostHerb Scriber wrote, “This movie is so much fun and exactly what a comic book movie should be. It’s funny, silly, short and sweet, action-packed. I loved the cosmic sci-fi moments. Lots of MCU tie-ins without being overbearing.”

Although he praised The Marvels‘ action-packed staging and cast (especially Ashton, 39), among other aspects, DiversityOwen Gleiberman also called the film “thin and episodic” in his review.

“You can weave a plot in your head, but you might have a harder time pretending you know why it matters — not within the metastasizing MCU mythos, but simply for its own sake,” he wrote.

Previous trailers for Marvel Studios’ final film in 2023 teased that Carol, Monica and Kamala’s light-based powers are intertwined, forcing the group to come together as Dar-Benn arrives to provoke another feud.

In the latest trailer, released Tuesday, Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury enlists the help of Carol (Larson, 34) in “the final stand,” at which point Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) is seen advising Carol, marking a surprise appearance for the character.

Thompson, 40, last appeared as Valkyrie in 2022 Thor: Love and Thunder, in which the character takes on the task of leading New Asgard on Earth. Her appearance in the new film directed by Nia DaCosta was not previously announced.

The Marvels is in theaters on Friday.
