‘The Marvels’ took in $47 million at the domestic box office after Marvel Studios’ other 2023 releases grossed over $100 million in opening weekends

The Marvels features Larson’s Carol Danvers, 34, teaming up with Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani following their Disney+ series debuts WandaVision and Ms. Marvel. The film also stars Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, continuing the character after starring in the miniseries this summer Secret invasion.
Despite the relatively low earnings of the film at the box office, The Marvels has both critic and audience approval on RottenTomatoes (62% critic approval, 84% audience approval). The film also has a B rating from CinemaScore, which surveys audience members at premieres.

The Marvels released at the end of a months-long Screen Actors Guild strike that prevented the film’s stars from speaking publicly about the film until 12:01 a.m. Thursday, when the strike officially ended.
The film’s release also comes amid ongoing uncertainty over the direction of the franchise and reports that Marvel Studios may recast or move away from Jonathan Majors as the main villain for upcoming titles in a range of recent multiverse-themed films and television series.

Majors, who played the villain Kang the Conqueror in the latest Ant man entrance and appeared in Loki as two variations of the same character, will appear in a New York courtroom for a criminal trial beginning Nov. 29 in connection with his March arrest and multiple misdemeanor counts of assault and harassment. Prior to his arrest, Majors’ character was expected to serve as the main antagonist in the sequel the Avengers movie, scheduled for 2025.
