On Wednesday, February 5, NFL confirmed in a press release that he would play his first game in Australia in 2026.
This move is part of the “perennial obligation” to play regular seasons in the town of Melbourne, starting at 2026, as NFL continues its efforts to reach “new markets around the world”.
Los Angeles Rams have been selected for playing in the first league game in Australia, which will be held in Melbourne Crickket Groun (MCG).

“Extension to Melbourne, Australia, a beautiful city with a rich sports history, is undergoing our ambitions to become a global sport and accelerate international growth,” added NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. “Together with the Victorian State Government, visit Victoria and Melbourne Crickket Ground, AS LOS Angeles Rams 2026. We look forward to making history in what is an important market for NFL and a significant next step in expanding our international trace.”
Australian politician Jacinta Allan, who is Prime Minister Victoria, said: “We are delighted that NFL will touch the Australia’s sports capital. Victoria is now the first country in Australia to host a regular NFL match of the season.”
Allan added: “It’s a win for Jobs, a company win and a fans’ victory that will see American football playing in the iconic MCG.”

NFL says Australia has a growing fan base of 6.6 million, making it a strong global game market.
There were 55 international regular seasonal games in the history of NFL. The host cities include São Paulo, London, Munich, Frankfurt, Mexico City and Toronto.
