50th Anniversary of Robert A. Caro’s Pulitzer Prize-winning biography, The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New Yorkit is celebrated in a special way — everyone who carried a hefty notebook will rejoice.
On Thursday, September 12, publishing company Alfred A. Knopf announced that the book – which was first published in hardcover on September 16, 1974 – will finally receive a digital edition to mark five decades since its release. The book is also the subject of a reading podcast miniseries hosted by 99% Invisible.
“I wanted an e-book that would be faithful to the physical book,” Caro, 88, said of the digital edition, according to a press release obtained by PEOPLE. The documentary book documents the ups and downs of the life and career of former New York Secretary of State and city planner Moses.

“I wanted it done because if you’ve learned some things about political power that you think are worth knowing, you’d like as many readers as possible to know them. And with so many readers now reading digitally, an e-book is essential,” the American journalist added.
“Fortunately, technology has advanced to the point where notes can be linked, which should improve the digital reading experience,” concluded Caro – who is also known for his biography of Lyndon Johnson.

“One of the One Hundred Greatest Books of the Modern Library of the 20th Century, Robert Caro’s book reveals what few outsiders knew: that Robert Moses was the most powerful man of his time in New York City and State,” the synopsis adds.
Former US President Barack Obama is a fan of the book and even went so far as to say that it helped shape his political career. “I think about Robert Caro and reading Power broker when I was 22 and I was just mesmerized, and I’m sure that helped shape my thinking about politics,” Obama said, according to the post.

The opening of the Robert A. Caro Archives at the New York Historical Society is also slated for the celebration A powerful mediator50th anniversary with a launch on September 16th.
“Through more than 100 boxes of notebooks, manuscript drafts, scrapbooks, correspondence, and other files, the Robert A. Caro Archive documents the work and process of a writer whose name is synonymous with dedicated research and whose books have won nearly every major literary honor, including two Pulitzer Prizes , two National Book Awards, three National Book Critics Circle Awards and the Francis Parkman Award,” reads a description on the museum’s website.
“His archive records not only the subject of his research, but also his methodology, most of all his journalistic rigor when interviewing subjects,” it added. “The Robert A. Caro Archive is an invaluable public resource that reflects an indefatigable mind and contains the seeds of countless stories waiting to be told.”
