Phoebe Waller-Bridge has spoken openly about her decision to forgo the Mr & Mrs Smith reboot, in which she will star alongside Community’s Donald Glover.
Speaking to Vanity Fear, the Fleabag star explained: “I worked on that show for six months completely with my heart and mind and I really cared about it – I still am. And I do. I know it’s going to be great. But sometimes it’s important to know when to leave the party. You don’t want to obstruct the view.”

She added: “Some marriages don’t work out.” The star also talked about her writing process: “What I look for in something is a little electricity, or danger, or say something, do something that I’ve never done before. If I don’t feel that, I can plow and plow, I just won’t make it in time.”
Phoebe left the project in September 2021 following claims of “creative differences” and sources told Variety that her departure from the series was a pleasant one. She has since been replaced as Jane Smith by Maya Erskine, who is perhaps best known for her roles in PEN15 and Obi Wan Kenobi.

Donald once praised Phoebe very much. Speaking at BAFTAs, he said: “My manager stopped me and said, ‘Have you seen Fleabag? It’s my favorite show. You have to watch it, it’s amazing.’

So I went home and I watched the first episode of Fleabag. And then I watched the second episode. I watched the entire season that night. And from the second I watched the first scene of the first episode, I was furious. Really angry. I’m not British, or a woman… but I should have been Fleabag.”

Phoebe left the show due to creative differences
Talking about his new co-star to Interview magazine, he said: “Yes. She’s crazy. It’s interesting. I really love the show. Now I’m writing the finale… I still love it. It [Phoebe]. I guess she still likes me.”
The upcoming miniseries will be based on the hit Mr and Mrs Smith, starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The story follows a married couple unaware that the other is actually a contract killer, and they are tasked with killing each other.
