What is the sixth commandment about?

The film dramatizes one of the most complex and confusing criminal cases in recent times, beginning when retired teacher Peter Farquhar (Timothy Spall) stumbles across charming schoolboy Ben Field (Éanna Hardwicke).

The synopsis continues: “It also focuses on the doubts surrounding Field’s relationship with Ann Moore-Martin (Anne Reid), Peter’s deeply devout neighbor, which opens a series of gruesome revelations.”

The film explores the ways Field, a former church member, manipulated Peter and Ann and tells of “extreme sarcasm, a sweeping police investigation, and a high-profile trial”.

“While poignantly highlighting the devastating impact of isolation and loneliness as Field approaches them, it also celebrates the lives of Peter and Anna as precious mentors, beloved loved ones, and cherished friends.”

Speaking of writing the play, Sarah Phelps explains why the stories of the victims are the most important factor. “One thing I don’t want to do is glorify the killer,” she said. “A lot of TV shows make you feel like you’re being mesmerized by an extremely intelligent killer, with some great shows, but I wanted to understand and honor the victims, giving them life and dignity. They weren’t just Ben Field’s victims.

“That underlying story was really important to me. Peter and Ann led a fulfilling, vibrant, intelligent, educated, inquisitive life with their family, friends, social life, love of poetry and theater, and their devout faith.”

All four episodes of the Sixth Commandment are available to stream on BBC iPlayer. The final episode airs on Tuesday 25 July on BBC One at 9pm.
