A pavilion in the main square of Palenque, Mexico recently displayed a charming nativity scene, complete with traditional holiday figurines lined up in peaceful tranquility. But these days, an unexpected guest has joined them.
Local journalist Eric Guzmán noticed the dog curled up inside the fenced display area and upon closer inspection realized that the dog had recently given birth to a litter of puppies.
Eric told The Dodo: “I was surprised and at the same time delighted to see that she had left her puppies in a safe place where they wouldn’t get wet or cold. “It’s been cold in Palenque lately, but usually hot all year round.”
With no other choice, the mother chose mange as a safe place for her cubs. The story of the dog and the puppies in the manger quickly spread, and the people of Palenque visited them, bringing them food and water.
Local officials allowed the dog and its puppies to stay, and animal advocates from Dejando Huellitas SOS Palenque took steps to ensure the dogs were well cared for.
They even started looking for puppy homes after the holiday season ended. Guzmán believes that the birth of puppies in a manger may not be a miracle, but it will leave a lasting legacy.
“Let’s hope that we as citizens will be more conscious when it comes to dogs, adopting feral dogs [rather than buy dogs]”, the journalist said. “We should love dogs, no matter where they come from.”
