Zone of interest depicts the private and personal life of real-life Nazi officer Höss, who was appointed commandant of Auschwitz in 1940, according to the Jewish Virtual Library. During the Second World War, Höss was given the task of turning the largest concentration camp of the Nazi regime into an extermination camp, and he lived with his family on the grounds of the camp.

Höss, who escaped Auschwitz as Germany’s defeat in World War II loomed, was eventually captured by British forces and extradited to Poland in 1946, according to the official website of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum. He was executed at the site of the Auschwitz camp he once commanded in April 1947, in what became the last public execution in Poland.
