Shortly after the couple caught the horror, Cat began making plans to return to Britain after 14 years working in Hollywood.

This week the 47-year-old takes over as host of ITV’s This Morning from Holly Willoughby.

And for the first time, we can tell the full, shocking story of the 2019 gun ordeal experienced by comic Patrick, 53, and Milo, then three.

They were enjoying a burger at the Shake Shack fast food restaurant in Century City, Los Angeles when emergency sirens started wailing.

In a 2020 interview, Cat revealed: “Everyone was told to lie down behind the counter or pushed into the toilet. People were screaming and crying.

“Then, while everyone was hiding, the FBI showed up with guns.

“Paddy kept Milo calm — he didn’t really know what was going on.

“As I was driving, I started seeing helicopters, news vehicles, firefighters and armed police emergency response units.

“Now I’m getting funny. It was terrifying. Paddy was shaken by this, more so than Milo, who did not quite understand.

“Gun laws in America are crazy.”

The new This Morning hosts have revealed that top TV hosts have replaced Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield

The Sun revealed on Sunday that the gun scare was sparked by disgruntled ex-Amazon employee Nicholas Oates — angry about poor pay and conditions.

Oates, then 26, set fire to books in the store and then pointed a gun at a member of staff before fleeing.

He was arrested the next day and sentenced to seven years and four months in state prison after pleading no contest to arson and assault with a firearm.

He is now out of jail and refused to comment on the shocking incident when approached by our reporter, but did groan: “Jeff Bezos and Amazon do whatever they want regardless of how anyone feels about it.

“Worrying about it now is a waste of time.”

Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore described the situation as one that “created terror in the minds of hundreds of shoppers.”

Cat began making plans to end her successful stay in the US soon after the scare.

Leaving LA, her family gave up a mansion with a gym and pool.

She takes over from Holly, who left This Morning last November after being targeted by stalkers.

He will appear alongside Good Morning Britain star Ben Shephard, who replaced the disgraced Phillip Schofield — sacked over an affair with a young female runner.

Cat said of her new gig: “‘I can’t wait to be part of the team.’
