Tim Burton 'Honestly' Considered Retirement After Making 2019's Dumbo: 'That Could Have Been It'

Tim Burton considered quitting filmmaking before his Netflix series Wednesday and upcoming ones Beetlejuice Beetlejuice regained his passion.

While the director was talking to Diversity on the news that he will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on September 3, Burton, 65, admitted he was at a crossroads after directing Disney’s 2019 live-action reimagining of the film. Dumbo.

“Honestly, later Dumbo I really didn’t know. I thought that might have been it, really. I could have retired, or become… so I wouldn’t have become an animator again, that’s it,” he said with a laugh, noting that both Wednesday and bug juice sequel to “he regenerated me.”

“Often, when you come to Hollywood, you try to be responsible with what you do with the budget and everything, but sometimes you can get a little lost,” he added. “This reinforced to me the feeling that it is important to do what I want, because then everyone will benefit.”

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice features Burton’s partners Wednesday star Jenna Ortega; she plays Winona Ryder’s daughter bug juice Lydia Deetz’s character in the new film, which comes some 36 years after the original.

Michael Keaton reprises his title role alongside Catherine O’Hara and Ryder, 52, who also return in the sequel. Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci and Willem Dafoe are among the supporting actors in the new film.

“I’m far away in no man’s land, so nobody’s knocking on my door,” Burton said Diversitywhen asked if he is still in demand for work in Hollywood. “But I’ve been through enough. I remember Batman it didn’t actually get the green light until later bug juice came out. So, as much as they say ‘We love you,’ we’ll see later how much they love you.”

Five years in between Dumborelease i Beetlejuice Beetlejuice mark a long amount of time between films for Burton, who has worked steadily since his first feature film debut, Peewee’s Big Adventurein 1985.

“It seemed like there was a change during the COVID pandemic where everything was in flux,” he told the newspaper during a break. “And so instead of getting caught up in it, I just worked on my feelings and stuff. Then Wednesday came across. It reconnected me to making things.”

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has its world premiere on August 28 at the Venice Film Festival before hitting theaters on September 6.
