Today Show Moms Consider Themselves 'Sisters' in Motherhood: 'We Lean on Each Other' (Exclusive)

Off screen, ladies Today they are thick as thieves. This strong bond is especially useful when parental support is needed.

For Mother’s Day this year, Savannah Guthrie, Hoda Kotb, Jenna Bush Hager, Dylan Dreyer and Sheinelle Jones marked the occasion by taping a special segment for the May 10 episode of NBC’s morning show. Together, the group reminisced about the special bond they share as working mothers.

“We’re moms, we all have little kids. We work together and rely on each other as moms. I mean, there’s not a day that goes by that we don’t share parenting tips or vent,” Guthrie, 52, says, noting that they’re all “sisters.”

Dreyer, 42, chimes in, saying, “We all kind of grew up in that ‘What are we doing?’ group, and none of us really know, but when you rely on your friends, you figure it out.”

“It’s fun to consider that for a second,” Kotb, 59, then explains. “I feel like we’re all running, dead running and exhausted. I think we’re all on this wheel. And suddenly, now, you have to stop and think and accept it and talk about motherhood. Because sometimes you just do.”

Breaking down specifically how they “lean on each other,” Jones, 46, says there are even “practical things” that enable them to do so.

“The other day on the show we were working on a topic about cell phone use and kids and social media and getting our kids off their cell phones,” she recalls. “Well, I got stuck in the middle of it. Savannah sent me this article. I gave it to Kayin, I said, ‘Look at this. Look at this link.’

Reflecting on the stress of motherhood, Bush Hager, 42, says she knows she “can relax” when she comes to work, where she can be with her group. Today show the moms. Noting that “none of us are perfectionists,” she further admits, “There’s no Pollyanna type like, ‘Oh, you didn’t take your kid to school?’ We applaud each other when we allow ourselves grace, when we say, ‘Oh, wait, I’m exhausted.’ It’s not like someone says, ‘Why are you so tired?'”

Summing up the dynamic of the group as a whole, Guthrie says that “actually talking to each other, having each other and venting” is helpful in deepening their bond.

“Generations of women have done this. We rely on each other for advice and wisdom, but we also rely on each other to just vent, blow off steam. I think we do it together,” she adds. “It’s actually really nice because I don’t think it’s always been the case that you have these big and demanding jobs and every person you work with is a mother and dealing with the same thing. So not only do we not have to hide it or pretend if it’s not challenging, we have this built-in support network.”
