Todd Pedersen applied for a job at a pest control company one day, but was turned down. At that point, Todd decided to start his own business to work for a rival organization that rejected him. He hired ten individuals and the group began selling Arizona pest control products door to door while pulling a trailer. He started with his mother’s loan, which he later paid back.

After a while he decided to stop selling pest control products and in 1999 he and his friend Keith Nellesen founded APX Alarm Solutions, a Utah security company specializing in burglar alarms in Provo.
