Tom Hanks Recalls Serving Cher When He Worked as a Hilton Hotel Bellhop in the ’70s

Tom Hanks recalls his youthful association with the music legend.

On Friday, the 67-year-old actor appeared on The Graham Norton Show by the side Cher i fellow actors Julia Roberts and Timothée Chalamet, and he entertained the audience with a story from his days working at a hotel in the 1970s.

“I worked for Cher. I was a doorman at the Oakland Hilton,” he began, prompting a surprised “No!” from the “If I Could Turn Back Time” singer, 77.

“You were with one of your rock and roll husbands and we had your bag. And then word came, ‘Hey, take this to Cher’s room,’ so I did,” Hanks continued. “I knocked on the door and let it down, and you came out and said, ‘Yeah, that’s it. Thanks, kid.’ And that was it.”

“So I worked for Cher,” he added, surmising that their brief interaction took place sometime in 1975 or 1976.

At the time, Cher was in a relationship with Allman Brothers Band frontman Gregg Allman, whom she married in June 1975.

During a guest appearance on the celebrity talk show, Hanks spoke highly of Cher, who admitted during the conversation that she herself is not a “big Cher fan” and that she doesn’t like watching her movies or listening to her own music. “You’re missing out,” the Elvis the star told her.

“Film perfection – Dear mother! 2,” he raved about the 2018 film that starred Cher as Ruby Sheridan. “When he drops ‘Fernando,’ the world stops. The sun collides with the stars. It’s perfection!”

Chalamet, 27, and Roberts, 56, then chimed in, sharing their favorite Cher movies — Infatuated with the moon and Silkwood — which prompted Hanks to suggest a group outing to the movies. “I think we should all go to the theater right now and see Cher’s movies,” he said.

“Let’s Cher-a-thon!” Roberts declared enthusiastically.

Backstage at the show, Hanks, Cher and Roberts posed for a series of fun photos together, according to a video shared on the Instagram page of Roberts’ stylist Elizabeth Stewart. In one image, the trio stood with their arms around each other as they smiled for the camera.

Hanks’ recounting of his stint as a porter at the time comes after he recently stated that he would take a food service job if it landed him a spot on a future lunar mission.

“I’d love to be the guy in charge of serving food and cracking jokes to and from the moon,” Hanks said The Telegraph in September while promoting his new impressive exhibition, of the moon, in London.

“If there was room, I’d be the guy who cleans, cracks jokes, tells stories and entertains everyone.”

“I’m your man. I’d probably sign up right now!” Hanks continued, “That might be a good idea, I’ll do all the work. I’ll clean the toilets. I’ll serve the food. I’ll fold the clothes. I’ll put away the equipment. That way the others could be free to do other things.”
