Age and Early Life of Tom Netherton

Tom Netherton was born Thomas Harold Netherton Jr. on January 11, 1947 in Munich, Germany. Lillian (Christensen) Netherton was his mother and Thomas, an officer in the United States Army, was his father. Because of his father’s military work, he was constantly moved as a child. After his father’s retirement in 1961, they finally moved to Bloomington, Minnesota.

Netherton then went to Bloomington High School. During his freshman year of high school, he and his friends challenged each other to audition for the school musical. He participated in the AFS Intercultural Program to obtain a leadership position in the school’s international youth exchange organization, the American Field Service (AFS) Club. He stayed in Peru during his summer vacation. After returning to Bloomington for his senior year, he was elected class president. He attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis to study architecture after graduating from high school in 1965.

Netherton made his television debut on The Lawrence Welk Show in a Christmas special on December 22, 1973, during the series’ 19th season. He was a regular on the program until it ended in 1982. He was one of the show’s most popular singers. Welk, the show’s host, felt that Netherton, a self-proclaimed ‘born-again Christian’, fit the image he wanted for his family show. He has recorded 13 albums and traveled extensively as a Christian music artist in addition to his television appearances.

Death

On January 7, 2018, Netherton died of pneumonia in Nashville, Tennessee. According to a Facebook post by his brother-in-law Bruce Koblish, Netherton had the flu which progressed to pneumonia. According to Koblish, Netherton went to the doctor, but he was too weak to recover. He was 71 years old when he died.
