Tony Garza was the United States Ambassador to Mexico from 2002 to 2009. He is a businessman and attorney who is considered an expert on US-Mexico relations, as well as business and legislative conditions in both countries, particularly in the Mexican energy sector. Garza is a director of the American Society/Council of the Americas and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and he is also the creator of the Aztec Eagle, the Mexican government’s highest award for foreigners.
Before becoming ambassador, he was director of the Texas Railroad Commission. He also served as Texas Secretary of State, Senior Political Advisor to the Governor of Texas, and District Judge. He currently works as an attorney for White & Case LLP in Mexico City and is president of Vianovo Ventures, a control consulting firm focused on the cross-border business community.
He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a BBA and Southern Methodist University School of Law with a JD. He is a member of the SMU Board of Trustees and the UT Austin Development Committee.
He has served on the boards of directors of several corporations, and is currently a director of Kansas City Southern, as well as president of its subsidiary, Kansas City Southern de Mexico, and of MoneyGram. He also serves as an objective director of Grupo ODH, which focuses on the deepwater drilling industry in Mexico, and is a member of the board and management board of the National Association of Corporate Directors.

Tony Garza Childhood
Tony Garza is the grandson of Mexican immigrants to the US and the son of a gas station owner. Garza received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Texas at Austin in 1980 and a juris doctorate from Southern Methodist University School of Law in 1983.
Career
Tony Garza became a Cameron County judge in 1988 after working as an attorney. He served as Texas Secretary of State from January 1995 to November 1997 before being elected to the three-member board of the Texas Railroad Commission, where he served as chairman.
He was appointed U.S. Ambassador to Mexico in 2002, a position he held until 2009. In 2009, the year he retired, Garza was awarded the Guila Azteca by Mexico, in recognition of his efforts to strengthen ties between Mexico and of the United States. This is the highest honor in Mexico given to foreigners. After that, he worked as a consultant at the company White & Case LLP and as the chairman of the board of the consulting company Vianovo Ventures.

According to one source, Tony Garza married Mara Asunción Aramburuzabala, president of Tresalia Capital, who had a personal fortune of $1.8 billion. In May 2010, the couple divorced. He later married Dr. Liz Beightler.
