Who is Tony Mowbray?
Tony Mowbray is a retired English footballer who currently works as the head coach of Sunderland. Mowbray had a successful playing career, representing Middlesbrough, Celtic and Ipswich Town as a defender. His coaching journey began at Ipswich Town, eventually securing his first managerial position at Hibernian in the Scottish Premier League.
In his inaugural season, Mowbray impressed and was honored with the Scottish Football Writers’ Association manager of the year award. He later moved to West Bromwich Albion in 2006, where he achieved success by winning the Football League Championship in 2008. Unfortunately, his team was relegated from the Premier League the following year.
Mowbray then took over at Celtic but faced the sack after a disappointing nine-month spell due to unsatisfactory results. After his time at Celtic, Mowbray returned to one of his former clubs, Middlesbrough, as their manager. However, he left in October 2013 after a poor start to the 2013–14 season.
After a brief stint at Coventry City, Mowbray took up the managerial position at Blackburn Rovers in February 2017. Despite Rovers being relegated to League One, Mowbray successfully led them back to the Championship at their first attempt.

Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray has given an update on injuries ahead of the team’s first pre-season game. Unfortunately, a large number of key players and new reinforcements will be sidelined due to injuries.
One of the new signings, Dutch defender Jenson Seelt, is currently dealing with an ankle problem that is expected to sideline him for most of the pre-season. In addition, Australian U23 defender Nectarios Triantis, who recently joined the club, has been allowed to return to Australia for a few weeks off as his season for club and country has been extended into June.
Apart from Seelt and Triantis, several other players will not be available for the start of the new season. Midfielder Corry Evans is recovering from a knee ligament injury, forward Ross Stewart has an Achilles problem and defender Aji Alese has a thigh injury. Dennis Cirkin is still out with an ankle problem, while Elliot Embleton, who broke his ankle in December, is not yet ready to return but could potentially be included towards the end of Sunderland’s pre-season trip to the United States.
Mowbray provided an insight into the players’ conditions, stating that Corry Evans and Ross Stewart will not be available for the start of the season. However, he expressed optimism that Elliot Embleton could be available or play a role in the final game of the US pre-season tour.
Regarding the return of injured players, Mowbray mentioned that Dennis Cirkin is not far away from returning, although his availability at the start of the season will be uncertain. As for Jenson Seelt, he is currently not training due to an ankle injury. Mowbray assured that injured players will gradually filter back into the squad over the next few weeks, and while it is frustrating to be without them, he is confident that they will be able to join as the season progresses. Players like Elliot Embleton may even start training before the trip to America.
What happened to Tony Mowbray?
During May 2022, Tony Mowbray stepped down as manager of Blackburn after five years at the club. He was the longest-serving coach in the Championship at the time of his departure. Mowbray felt his departure was imminent, as he stated that there had been no talks, approaches or discussions regarding his future, despite the season being just a week away.
Blackburn Rovers have officially announced that their manager, Tony Mowbray, will be leaving the club after his existing contract expires this summer. Blackburn had a promising start to the season, but ultimately failed to make the Premier League and Championship play-offs.
They finished in eighth place, winning just five of their last 20 games. Mowbray, 58, previously led the club out of League One in 2018 but failed to maintain his position in the second division after joining mid-season. During his tenure at Blackburn, Mowbray achieved two 15th-place finishes and one 11th-place finish in the Championship ahead of their most successful campaign this year.
However, with his contract expiring in the summer, Mowbray has predicted his departure from Ewood Park. In his statement, Mowbray expressed surprise at the lack of communication about his future, given the near end of the season.
Tony Mowbray’s career at Blackburn
On 22 February 2017, Tony Mowbray took over as head coach of Blackburn Rovers, signing an 18-month contract that has been extended until the end of the 2017–18 season. Despite an improvement in form that gave some hope, Blackburn Rovers were eventually relegated to League One at the end of the 2016–17 season.
Mowbray then agreed to a new contract which saw him stay at the club until 2019, with an option for an additional 12 months. Under his leadership, Blackburn Rovers quickly secured promotion back to the Championship after spending just one season in League One. Their promotion was confirmed on 24 April with a 1-0 win against Doncaster Rovers.
During the 2018–19 season, Mowbray guided Blackburn Rovers to 15th place in the Championship. In the EFL Cup, they reached the third round before being eliminated by AFC Bournemouth. In the FA Cup, Blackburn Rovers were eliminated in the third round after extra time in a test against Newcastle United.
In the following season 2019–20, Mowbray led Blackburn Rovers to 11th place in the Championship. They reached the second round of the EFL Cup before being defeated by Sheffield United. In the FA Cup, they were eliminated in the third round by fellow Championship side Birmingham City.
Mowbray concluded his contract with Blackburn Rovers in May 2022, after five years as their manager. He was subsequently replaced by Jon Dahl Tomasson as head coach.
Mowbray was appointed Sunderland manager on 30 August 2022, taking over from Alex Neil. In his first season with the club, he led Sunderland to the EFL Championship Play-offs, finishing in 6th place. They won the first leg against Luton Town 2–1 at the Stadium of Light, but were beaten 2–0 in the second leg, resulting in their elimination 3–2 on aggregate.
