Tony Valdez, a famous journalist, has just died at the age of 78. He is best known for his work as a reporter and broadcaster on KTTV Channel 11 in Los Angeles. His son informed KTTV on Friday that Valdez suffered from kidney failure that led to his death and that he was at home at the time of his death.
Several other reporters and journalists paid tribute to Valdez on various social media channels, describing the years they worked with him. Journalist Araksya Karapetyan posted on Facebook about Valdez’s achievements over the years. According to Araksya, she had the opportunity to work with Valdez at Fox 11. She went on to say:
“I remember how kind and supportive he was from the very beginning when I joined the team.” He really cares about me, my story, who I am, what I stand for and what I have to give the world. We’re on the go, but if there’s a few moments between the news, we’ll meet in the newsroom or in the hallway and talk about… life.”
Araksya further revealed that Tony Valdez once asked her about her family life and she felt safe and secure when she heard his voice. She writes that Tony’s story was once old-school, with facts, details, emotion, and depth. She went on to say:
“I always regret not taking one of his tours to learn more about Los Angeles.” Tony works as a scholar for the Los Angeles Conservancy, leading tours of downtown. “Someday…”, I used to say.

Tony Valdez never discussed his growing up, but he attended Los Angeles City College and California State University. He spent some time in the United States Army. In Los Angeles, he worked as a writer, producer, and reporter for KLTA and KCET before moving on to La Opinion and the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner. He started working at KTTV in 1980, covering LA’s Most Wanted news section. He’s also hosted Sunday Afternoon, a weekly public program focused on local and national issues with current headlines and news stories. From 1991 to 1993, he was the host of the station’s weekend news program.
Valdez left the news station in 2016, and on his last day, the station held an online memorial and farewell ceremony. Tony has also won Emmy, Golden Mike, and Los Angeles Press Club awards for his broadcast talent. Tony Valdez was also embroiled in a dispute with KFI talk show hosts John and Ken in 2006.
