The tourist was found dead on Monday around 12:30 in the Colina Mar apartment complex in the resort of Puerto Rico in the municipality of Mogán in the south of the island.
He allegedly suffered a head injury from a blow or fall.
The victim was initially British, but police sources later confirmed he was Irish.
A Civil Guard source said last night: “There were signs of violence but the results of the autopsy are still pending.”
The cleaner raised the alarm after finding the body of a lifeless man when she tried to enter the apartment.
A friend he is believed to have traveled to the island with was also in the room when police arrived.
He was said to be “completely disoriented” amid unconfirmed claims he may have been under the influence of drugs.
He was pronounced dead at the scene despite efforts by paramedics to revive him.
The island’s Civil Guard said last night that a secrecy order imposed on the case by a judge meant they could not make any official comment on the ongoing investigation.
The possibility that he could have died in an accident has not been ruled out, although initial reports indicate that his death is potentially related to a crime.
Apartment hotel with three stars. Colina Mar, is located in the upper part of Puerto Rico near the popular shopping center Europa.
It is described online as a perfect place for families with a “calm and relaxed atmosphere”.
In nearby Lanzarote, an allegedly “drunk and drugged” British driver is accused of mowing down a family of tourists and killing a four-month-old baby.
British expatriate Olivia Brown (23) was allegedly over the legal limit and under the influence of alcohol and drugs when her car crossed the road and hit two families last week.
She was charged with manslaughter and drunken driving, but her hearing was interrupted after she suffered a panic attack.
The hotel worker is currently under house arrest and could be jailed for causing the death of British woman Harper Ayton.
