In addition to his successful acting career, Michael J. Fox is renowned for being a pioneer in the study of Parkinson’s disease. He founded The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research in 2000, nine years after he received his Parkinson’s diagnosis at the age of 29, in addition to playing the title role in the enduring Back to the Future movie and the 1980s comedy Family Ties. In both his 2023 documentary Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie and his 2020 biography No Time Like the Future: An Optimist Considers Mortality, Michael has been candid about his battles with the illness.
Fortunately, Michael has not had to face Parkinson’s disease and his changing profession alone. He married Tracy Pollan, a former co-star on Family Ties, in 1988, and she has been his supporter ever since his diagnosis. When Michael found out he had Parkinson’s, the two had just been married for three years. Tracy has been by his side throughout the entire process.
Tracy said to PEOPLE in March 2023 of their nearly 35-year union, “I think we truly listen to each other, and we are there for each other when we need each other. And when it’s necessary, we also give each other space. Just trying to be there and feeling off of what’s required right now. Tracy “gives our family everything that we need,” Michael continued.
On the first season of Family Ties, Tracy and Michael became friends. Tracy was chosen to play Ellen Reed, Alex P. Keaton’s love interest, in the movie. While Alex and Ellen’s relationship came to an end, Tracy and Michael’s relationship appeared to be just getting started.
Since Tracy was already devoted to actor Kevin Bacon, their connection was exclusively professional at the time. However, by the time they collaborated on the 1988 film Bright Lights, Big City, things started to get romantic.
As soon as Michael learned that she and Kevin had broken up, he reportedly contacted his former co-star. The teenage actor recalled the beginning of their relationship to People in 1989, saying, “It sounds really terrible, but it was one of those things.” You hear someone say, “Did you hear that so-and-so aren’t together anymore?,” and you think, “That’s really awful.
