Tragedy as teacher, 52, is found dead on stage at scene of school nativity play just hours after performance

A TEACHER at one of the UK’s most prestigious private schools has been found dead at the site of their nursery.

Priests found his body on the stage of a nearby church, where he had designed the school’s much-anticipated Christmas play.

The body of the 52-year-old veteran teacher was found last Tuesday morning. It is assumed that he died the previous evening – after birth.

The school’s Christmas carol concert was also due to take place in the same church, but has now been moved to another venue.

Will Coleridge, vicar of St Matthew’s Church of England, Bayswater, west London, told The Sun: “Unfortunately we had an unfortunate incident here on Monday night. It was inside the church. I can’t say too much, but it’s horrible.

“I half knew the deceased. Of course, the crèches here are all canceled now – they’ll do it elsewhere, understandably.”

Pembridge Hall School, two minutes’ walk from St Matthew’s, is a highly sought-after center for preparatory education for girls aged four to 11.

It is a sister school to Wetherby, attended by Princes William and Harry and actor Hugh Grant.

The school advertises its strong links with the local community, with Friday assemblies and seasonal productions held regularly at St Matthew’s.

Sophie Banks, headteacher of Pembridge Hall School, told The Sun: “We are all deeply saddened by the recent death of a member of our school community.

“On behalf of the school, we would like to express our sincere condolences to their family and friends. As we move through this challenging time together, we will focus on supporting our girls and colleagues.”

A spokesman for London Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 8:52am on December 5 to reports of an incident in St Petersburgh Place, W2.

“We sent a number of resources to the scene, including a doctor in a rapid response car and an ambulance crew. Unfortunately, the man was found dead at the scene.”

Scotland Yard told The Sun: “Police were called at 08:55 on December 5 to a church in St Petersburgh Place W2 after a 52-year-old man was found dead. The next of kin have been informed.

“The death is being treated as unexpected but initial inquiries do not indicate it is suspicious. A file will be prepared for the coroner.”
