Poppy’s family set up a charity in her name

The fashion student came home for the summer before tragedy struck.

Despite the efforts of the emergency services, Poppy could not be saved.

Poppy leaves behind four siblings and devastated parents Vicki and Peter.

Her family has since founded the Poppy’s Light Foundation, whose goal is to help children and young people with cardiac screening.

They hope to prevent future deaths as they believe Poppy could have been saved if she had been screened.

Poppy’s mum Vicki told ChronicleLive: “The fundraising for Poppy’s Light has been such a success and it’s such a comfort.

“What we found is that there really isn’t a lot of support for grieving children.

“Poppy was a loving person, so lively, so full of light.

“So the charity is a way to keep that light shining while doing something that can support other kids.”

The family are aiming to raise £25,000 and Vicki said “the whole community” has come together to support them.

Peter, one of Poppy’s brothers and other fathers are climbing Kilamanjaro next month to collect donations.

Sudden adult death syndrome, also known as Sudden Arrhythmia Death Syndrome (SADS), causes fatal cardiac arrest without warning of heart problems.

The syndrome can occur at any age and can affect those who are fit and healthy.

Sudden Arrhythmia Death Syndromes (SADS)

Sudden arrhythmic death syndromes (SADS) are genetic heart conditions that can cause sudden death in young, apparently healthy people.

Although symptoms vary somewhat among different types of sudden arrhythmic death syndrome, common symptoms include:

  • Fainting or seizure during exercise, excitement or fear.
  • Chest pain during exercise.
  • Shortness of breath during exercise.

Types of SADS conditions

  • Brugada syndrome
  • Catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT)
  • Long QT interval syndrome
  • Short QT syndrome
  • Timothy syndrome
  • Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome

Treatment varies depending on the type of sudden arrhythmic death syndrome.

If someone in your family has sudden arrhythmic death syndrome, check with your doctor to see if other members of your family will be tested for the genetic mutation.

They can help you understand who should be tested.

Having family members who know how to perform CPR and having an automated external defibrillator (AED) at home can help reduce the risk.

A test at home reveals the risk of a sudden heart attack in just 5 minutes

SWEDISH scientists have developed a questionnaire that quickly identifies people at high risk with the same accuracy as a general practitioner examination.

Research shows that it has the same level of accuracy as blood tests and blood pressure measurements.

The study, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, uses data from the SCAPIS population group, based at the University of Gothenburg.

The do-it-yourself test consists of 14 questions that take five to eight minutes to answer.

The questions address factors such as age, sex, weight, waist circumference, smoking, high blood pressure, family history of cardiovascular disease, high blood fat and diabetes.

By combining information from the responses in a special algorithm, the home test can detect 65 percent of people at highest risk of cardiovascular disease, according to the study.

The NHS has also started rolling out do-it-yourself kits that can detect if you are at risk of a fatal heart problem.

The tests, which eligible people can download from their GP, estimate the likelihood of having a heart attack or stroke in the next ten years.

It also gives patients cholesterol readings, estimates heart age and calculates body mass index (BMI).

People between the ages of 40 and 74 who are not currently taking statins or blood pressure medication can order one free of charge from their doctor.

PocDoc, the manufacturer of the kit, said testing and sending results to the NHS can be done within nine minutes.
