Chris was the legendary host of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?
But as of 2020, he was only taking spots for a talk show host or interviews.
He has now officially downed tools after a rich and varied career.
Asked if he had retired, Chris, 78, told The Sun: “Yes. I stopped.
“I mean, I think the lockdown is real, you just start to put everything in a little perspective and I thought, I’ve been doing this thing for 50 years.
“You know, I don’t need money without you sounding silly. So I was thinking why am I still doing this?”
Chris appeared on Alan Titchmarsh’s Love Your Weekend 2023 and the compilation show, Britain’s Favorite Sitcoms.
But since he made the decision, he has filled his time with travel.
He said at the TRICS Christmas lunch: “I’ve been doing a lot of things that I’ve been putting off instead, which have been great.
“For example, last year I went on safari with my two oldest grandsons, you never have time for these things.
“My wife Jane and I just got back from Borneo, where I’ve always wanted to go and I just got back from photographing bears in Alaska. So why the hell would I go to work?”
The ITV legend, 77, is landing a big new radio job nine years after leaving the iconic quiz show
Chris’s big television break came in 1974 on the children’s show Tiswas, followed by roles on Capital FM and hosting Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Followed.
And it is still offered today.
He said: “My agent is still being offered all sorts of nonsense. A masked singer? No thanks! I refused it.”
Chris wouldn’t even like a travel show – something older stars like Joanna Lumley have continued to undertake.
He added: “It’s better when no one tells you where to go, what to do and you know the schedules.
“I don’t really miss it. It was great.
“I still see a lot of my friends, you know, we’re doing the lost lunch for Capital Radio – it’s the day after tomorrow (Thursday).
“I probably hang out with the Capital guys more than anyone else, but I still see a lot of it and I still see some of Millionaire.
“But in the capital, it was so brilliant for us. We had such a gang.”
